Showroom owner testifies on robbery<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): A car showroom owner who testified in the Jagorawi
\ntoll road robbery court case said the Mercedes involved in the
\nrobbery was returned two days after the incident.<\/p>\n
Witness Dedy Wijaya, a showroom owner on Jl. R.S. Fatmawati,
\nSouth Jakarta, yesterday said defendant Erling Doly Wijaya alias
\nMikel, returned the Mercedes five months after buying the car in
\ninstallments on behalf of his superior.<\/p>\n
\"Monthly installments (of Rp 4 million) for the first five
\nmonths went smoothly,\" Dedi said of payments for the Rp 185
\nmillion Mercedes.<\/p>\n
But two days after the robbery on Oct. 11 last year Mikel,
\nnamed as an accomplice, returned the vehicle for minor repairs,
\nDedy told the Bogor District Court.<\/p>\n
\"I'd like to try another car,\" Dedi said quoting Mikel. Mikel
\nhad said the Mercedes didn't run very well and Dedy lent him a
\nHonda sedan.<\/p>\n
Two months later he learned from police that the Mercedes was
\nallegedly used in a crime.<\/p>\n
\"I delivered the car to the police myself,\" Dedy said.<\/p>\n
Dedy said when Mikel went to the showroom to buy the car he
\nwas ineligible for a loan.<\/p>\n
He claimed to know a man called Idfiel Jaya Anwar who Dedy
\nalso knew, as Idfiel had previously bought a car from him.<\/p>\n
Dedy said Idfiel told him on the telephone that he would
\nguarantee the loan.<\/p>\n
The Mercedes was identified as the vehicle behind a Toyota
\nKijang van from which prosecutors said another defendant,
\nBudiarto, shot treasurer Zaenuddin Lesmana, on the toll road on
\nOct. 11 1996. Budiarto is still at large.<\/p>\n
Another witness said earlier the victim and defendants were
\nall working with Idfiel on land appropriation in Jonggol, West
\nJava. Another suspect named by police, Tjetje Tajudin, died in
\npolice custody.<\/p>\n
The indictment said Mikel had watched the robbery and murder
\nfrom the Mercedes. The robbery involved Rp 312 million in cash
\nand documents regarding the land appropriation. Zaenuddin was
\ncarrying almost Rp 600 million for land compensation.<\/p>\n
Agus Sudrajat, another witness from the state-run BRI's Bogor
\nbranch bank, confirmed the late treasurer had withdrawn Rp 592.5
\nmillion from the bank on Oct. 11.<\/p>\n
\"Around 2:30 p.m. Zaenuddin came alone with 16 checks from the
\n(state-owned housing firm) East Jakarta Perum Perumnas office,\"
\nAgus, a bank teller, said.<\/p>\n
Since 1995, Zaenuddin had cashed checks for the same office at
\nleast once a month, Agus said.<\/p>\n
Bogor police had questioned Idfiel several times before police
\ndeclared him a suspect for masterminding the robbery and murder.
\nThis was based on confessions of Mikel and the other defendant
\nnamed as the Kijang driver, Hendrik.<\/p>\n
Idfiel was released by the Cibinong Prosecutor's Office for
\nlack of evidence last month, when Mikel withdrew his statement.<\/p>\n
The indictments against Mikel and Hendrik, who are being tried
\nseparately, said Iedfil asked Mikel to steal the money from
\nZaenuddin and kill him if necessary. (24\/anr)<\/p>",
