Shoplifting syndicate may target new malls<\/p>\n

Police warned managements of newly opened malls and shopping
\ncenters of a shoplifting syndicate following the arrest of three
\nalleged members.<\/p>\n
\"Newly opened malls and shopping centers are easy prey for
\nshoplifters because their security have no experience in handling
\npetty crime,\" said Jakarta Police detectives chief Sr. Comr.
\nMathius Salempang on Monday.<\/p>\n
Police detectives foiled a shoplifting attempt and arrested
\nthree men identified as AFK, 34; DB, 41; and GMS, 26; on Sunday
\nevening.<\/p>\n
Salempang said that it was the first time police managed to
\narrest organized shoplifters. He alleged that there were several
\nother shoplifting syndicates operating in malls and shopping
\ncenters.<\/p>\n
\"The three suspects were arrested as they were about to get
\ninto a taxi in front of Carrefour hypermarket on Jl. M.T.
\nHaryono, South Jakarta,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Police failed to nab their four female accomplices who had
\nalready fled the scene in a Toyota Kijang minivan.<\/p>\n
Salempang said that the shoplifters usually acted in a group
\nof seven to 10 people. Each member of the group has a role,
\nincluding diverting the attention of cashiers and security
\nguards.<\/p>\n
\"They (the suspects) told investigators that they conducted
\ntheir activities three times a week,\" said an investigator.<\/p>\n
They named their fences only as Ronny and Kacung.<\/p>\n
\"The fences are the actual brain of this operation,\" the
\ninvestigator said.<\/p>\n
Police seized five cardboard boxes of tins of powdered milk as
\nevidence. Each 800 gram tin of powdered milk is priced at Rp
\n117,000 (US$14).<\/p>",
