LHOKSEUMAWE, Aceh: An armed gang and police officers exchanged
\nfire in a new incident early Saturday, the military said here on
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
Col. Jhonny Wahab, commander of the Liliwangsa military
\ndistrict, said a number of estimated casualties was not available
\nand details of the incident remain unclear.<\/p>\n
\"I have yet to receive a report on the casualties in the
\nskirmish,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The military, he added, had received two different versions of
\nthe encounter.<\/p>\n
According to the first version, the clash took place when
\nmembers of the joint police-military Crack Riot Troop (PPRM) task
\nforce together with the North Aceh Police were checking passing
\nvehicles for firearms.<\/p>\n
\"When some security officers approached a car, they were
\nsuddenly fired upon by people inside the vehicle. The officers
\ninstantly returned fire, but the assailants fled the scene in
\ntheir car.<\/p>\n
\"This reportedly happened at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday,\" Wahab
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The second version has it that security officers were attacked
\nby members of an unidentified armed gang in front of the North
\nAceh Police station, he said.<\/p>\n
The time of the attack was said to be at about 12:15 a.m. on
\nSaturday. Some PPRM officers guarding the police headquarters
\nsaid they had been alerted by gunfire directed at the
\nheadquarters.<\/p>\n
The officer in charge of the police station, Lt. Col. Iskandar
\nHasan, could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n
The atmosphere in Lhokseumawe during daylight hours on
\nSaturday otherwise appeared calm and people were going about
\ntheir business as usual.<\/p>\n
Public transportation services were also operating normally.<\/p>\n
