        "content": "<p>The Ministry of Defence has eliminated shooting training from the\nprogramme for aspiring managers of the \u2018Red and White Village\nCooperatives\u2019 and \u2018Red and White Fishermen\u2019s Villages\u2019 following the\ndeaths of five participants. Brigadier General TNI Rico Ricardo Sirait,\nHead of the Defence Information Bureau, confirmed the decision was made\nafter a joint evaluation. He acknowledged that video footage of shooting\ntraining circulating on social media was authentic but was recorded\nbefore the latest evaluation took place. \u201cThe documentation or coverage\nrelated to the planned shooting activity was an activity carried out\nlast week, before the latest evaluation of the programme\u2019s\nimplementation,\u201d Rico told Tempo on Monday, 29 June 2026. As a follow-up\nto the evaluation, the Ministry of Defence has adjusted the programme\u2019s\napproach, including changing the name from Basic Military Training to\nNational Defence and Managerial Training. This change is accompanied by\na reduction in tactical and technical military material. \u201cThis includes\nshooting activities which are no longer part of the current training.\nThe intensity of physical activities has also been reduced and adjusted\nto the participants\u2019 backgrounds as civilians,\u201d Rico stated. He added\nthat the programme\u2019s focus is now directed towards building discipline,\ncharacter, leadership, teamwork, responsibility, national insight, and\nmanagerial readiness for their future roles. The first wave of the\ntraining programme runs from 17 June to 31 July 2026, with a total of\n35,476 participants, comprising 30,000 candidates for village\ncooperative managers and 5,476 for fishermen\u2019s village managers. Five\nparticipants died within the first ten days of the programme. The\ndeceased were identified as Nola Dya Sari, Novia Rahmadhani Sihotang,\nAnisa Muyassaroh, Yonanda Muhammad Taufiq, and Muhammad Rifki Renaldi\nGunawan. Nola Dya Sari, who was training at the State Defence Education\nUnit in Kalimantan, died on 26 June 2026 after complaining of shortness\nof breath and fever. On the same day, Muhammad Rifki Renaldi Gunawan, a\nparticipant at the 465 Para Commando Battalion Education Unit in East\nJakarta, also died after experiencing similar symptoms; he had a known\nhistory of hypertension and obesity. Novia Rahmadhani Sihotang, a\nparticipant at the Indonesian Air Force Doctrine Development, Education,\nand Training Command Language Centre in Jakarta, died on 23 June 2026\ndue to active tuberculosis. Anisa Muyassaroh died on 18 June 2026, a day\nafter training began, from heat stroke while attending training at the\nMulawarman Regional Military Command Education Unit in Balikpapan, East\nKalimantan.
