I was startled on hearing that Minister of Defense and
\nSecurity\/Armed Forces (ABRI) Commander had issued an order to
\nshoot all rioters on the spot.<\/p>\n
At a time when the people do not trust ABRI and almost hate
\nit, why did he make the statement? I am afraid the people's trust
\nwill further erode. He says that rioters are among the people who
\ndestroy and torch public facilities, loot shops and houses, and
\ncreate chaos in the community. In my opinion these are the common
\npeople who only join the crowds because there are persons behind
\nthe action, in other words provocateurs. Now the provocateurs,
\nwho according to the Police Chief instigate the crowds and
\ndisappear when a riot starts, are free to proceed to other places
\nto create other riots.<\/p>\n
If ABRI intends to shoot on the spot rioters who are the
\ncommon people, will such measures not trigger the people's hate?<\/p>\n
I think it would be a good thing if the military were more
\nproactive in taking preventive or precautionary measures. They
\ndid take some measures but failed to find any provocateurs.
\nPerhaps military intelligence could be activated to probe the
\nriots and detect the culprits. Also, the special forces planned
\ncan be assigned to look for provocateurs. Rioters can be
\ninterrogated to find out who gave them instructions. If only the
\nrioters are shot at, the culprits will never be found.<\/p>\n
The important thing is intention. If there is any seriousness,
\nis it really impossible to discover the truth? In essence, if the
\nArmed Forces takes the people's side, the aspersions directed
\ntoward it will cease and the people will show themselves to be
\njust, as often demanded of them by Gen. Wiranto.<\/p>\n
