In a post on\nsocial media platform X, Gharibabadi stressed that any credible\nframework for maritime traffic in the strategic waterway must be based\non coordination with Tehran and in line with Article 5 of the Islamabad\nMemorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States.\n\u201cSafe shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz cannot be guaranteed\nthrough ambiguous arrangements, parallel routes, or decision-making\noutside the consideration of Iran as a coastal state,\u201d he wrote. He\nwarned that failure to meet these provisions would result in the\nsuspension of established parallel routes. Previously, Iran\u2019s Foreign\nMinistry stated that the Strait of Hormuz lies within the territorial\nwaters of Iran and Oman. The ministry added that the management of\nshipping in the strait would be regulated under Article 5 of the MoU.\nThe statement was issued in response to a joint communiqu\u00e9 by the United\nStates and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which called for the\nreopening of the Strait of Hormuz and stressed the importance of free,\nunconditional, and unrestricted freedom of navigation in the strategic\nwaterway. The joint US-GCC statement also rejected the imposition of\ntariffs, fees, or any attempt to enforce control over the Strait of\nHormuz.
