        "content": "<p>Shipping deregulation<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The government plans to deregulate the shipping<br>\nindustry to improve local shipping firm's competitiveness against<br>\nforeign competitors, Minister of Transportation Haryanto<br>\nDhanutirto said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"We have already discussed the planned deregulation under the<br>\nsupervision of the Coordinating Minister for Production and<br>\nDistribution, Hartarto,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the transportation of Indonesia's exports and imports<br>\nwas 97 percent dominated by foreign shipping firms, which also<br>\ncontrolled 44 percent of the domestic shipping market.<\/p>\n<p>\"All of these things must become our attention,\" Haryanto<br>\nsaid, refusing to give details of the planned deregulation.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian Ship Owners' Association said local shipping<br>\nfirms had to pay several taxes which gave foreign firms, which do<br>\nnot have to pay the taxes, an advantage.
