Ship parts now duty free<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Shipping companies are now exempt from paying
\nimport duties on raw materials, components and spare parts, the
\nMinistry of Communications announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Secretary-general Anwar Suprijadi said the finance minister
\nhad issued a decree removing duties on imported parts and
\ncomponents for the firm.<\/p>\n
"We are just waiting for the right time to implement it,"
\nAnwar was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
He said the exemption was aimed at supporting the development
\nof the country's shipping industry, suffering from soaring prices
\nof parts and components due to the rupiah's fall against the U.S.
\ndollar.<\/p>\n
More than 70 percent of ship components and parts are
\nimported.<\/p>\n
Anwar said the soaring price of ship components and parts had
\nforced many of the country's shipping lines to stop operations.
