        "content": "<p>Ship crews suffer in Asian crisis<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (AP): Asia's economic crisis has left a growing<br>\nnumber of ships' crews stranded in ports without food or other<br>\nessential supplies, forcing some sailors to sell ship parts for<br>\nscrap in order to survive, a news report in Singapore said on<br>\nWednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The owner of the Singapore-registered vessel Wan Ling, which<br>\nwas stuck in Vietnam, stopped providing the ship's 24 crew<br>\nmembers with food and other necessities in November, The Shipping<br>\nTimes newspaper said.<\/p>\n<p>Wan Ling crewmen, mostly Indonesian, Philippines, Myanmar and<br>\nBangladeshi citizens, sold parts of the ship to buy basic<br>\nnecessities, but have since received some provisions from the<br>\nLondon-based International Transport Workers Federation.<\/p>\n<p>The Wan Ling is \"not an isolated case, it's a result of the<br>\neconomic crisis\", Simon Des Baux, federation regional assistant,<br>\nwas quoted as telling the newspaper.<\/p>",
