Ship carrying corn from Argentina turned away<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government has refused to allow the docking
\nof a freighter carrying some 68,897 tons of corn from Argentina
\nfor fear of contamination from foot-and-mouth disease which has
\nbroken out in the South American country.<\/p>\n
The MV Captain Diamantis Pariues is the second freighter that
\nhas been refused permission to dock by the Center for
\nAgricultural Quarantine at the Ministry of Agriculture. It is now
\nanchored in the Sunda Strait, some two miles out from Cigading
\nseaport in Merak, Banten.<\/p>\n
Cigading port operator PT Krakatau Bandar Samudra's director
\nFazwar Bujang said the freighter was carrying 68,897 tons of corn
\nof which 48,897 tons were to be unloaded at the seaport.<\/p>\n
The freighter intended to unload the remaining corn at Tanjung
\nPerak Port in Surabaya, he said, refusing to name the importer of
\nthe corn, Bisnis Indonesia reported.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month, the freighter MV Agia Eirini carrying
\n38,000 tons of Argentinean corn imported by PT Cargill Indonesia
\nwas also refused entry. It is now still anchored outside Tanjung
\nPriok Port in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The government in April issued a regulation banning the
\nimportation of certain products from countries deemed
\nunsuccessful in controlling the spread of foot-and-mouth disease,
\nincluding Uruguay, Britain, the Netherlands, and Argentina.<\/p>\n
The countries affected are being periodically evaluated and,
\nas of May, imports from France, Ireland, Peru, and Brazil were
\npermitted to enter the country again on a conditional basis,
\nSofyan Sudrajat of the Ministry of Agriculture said.<\/p>\n
If there are no new outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in the
\naffected countries within 30 days of the last outbreak, then the
\nministry will again review the ban, he said.<\/p>\n
Commodities banned from being imported into Indonesia include
\npigs and pig products; pets such as dogs, cats, and horses;
\norganic products such as meat, milk, embryos, animal fertilizers,
\nand eggs; feedstuffs; and used farm equipment.<\/p>\n
Separately, the Minister of Industry and Trade, Luhut Binsar
\nPanjaitan, warned importers to carefully heed the kinds of
\nproducts banned from importation.<\/p>\n
\"Don't let it happen that (a product) is imported, and we
\nlater discover that it originates from an affected country,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Luhut said that a team consisting of officials from his
\nministry, the Ministry of Agriculture, associations and
\nagricultural experts, will begin on Monday to make an inventory
\nof all the commodities banned from entering the country. (tnt)<\/p>",
