Ship captain drowns<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The captain of a fishing ship, Sarip, 45,
\ndrowned some 60 nautical miles from Sunda Kelapa Port in North
\nJakarta early Wednesday after jumping into the sea to avoid
\nattack by pirates.<\/p>\n
Sugeng, a captain of another vessel operating nearby, said
\nyesterday that Sarip's body was found several hours later in the
\narea where the incident occurred.<\/p>\n
Sugeng said Sarip woke up sometime late Tuesday night or early
\nWednesday morning to find that seven pirates had boarded the ship
\nand were plundering its navigation equipment, ranging from radio
\nto sonar equipment.<\/p>\n
Sarip and his eight crew members were unable to stop the
\npirates, who were armed with machetes.<\/p>\n
\"He became terrified and plunged himself into the sea without
\nbringing anything with him,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The pirates later sailed away with stolen goods worth tens of
\nmillion of rupiah. When the crew found that their captain was
\nmissing, they became panicked, Sugeng said, adding that they
\nlater asked for help from another fishing vessel.<\/p>\n
He said Sarip had been the captain of the ship, Jimmy, for
\nthree months.<\/p>\n
The victim's body was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo General
\nHospital for a postmortem examination.<\/p>\n
Yanto, Sarip's brother-in-law, lamented Sarip's death, who had
\nbeen a sailor for about 15 years.<\/p>\n
\"It's his fate and I hope it won't happen to other people in
\nthe future,\" said Yanto.<\/p>\n
He said Sarip would be buried in his hometown of Tegal,
\nCentral Java. Sarip is survived by his wife Tarsini and six
