        "content": "<p>The critical stance of earlier ulama towards the tyranny of rulers\nwas very sharp, as was their defence of the weak.<\/p>\n<p>One such figure was Imam Tajuddin as-Subki. In his work Mui\u2019d\nal-Ni\u2019am wa Mubid as-Saqam, this scholar who lived in the 8th century\nHijriyah strongly defended the weak.<\/p>\n<p>The figure whose full name was Tajuddin Abdul Wahhab bin Ali as-Subki\ndid not forget the rights of farmers.<\/p>\n<p>He also urged the Mamluks and soldiers not to oppress them and not to\nforce them to do anything without a justified reason.<\/p>\n<p>In explaining the obligations of soldiers, he said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmong the rights of Allah that they must fulfil as a form of\ngratitude for His blessings is to treat farmers well. If Allah willed,\nHe could make a farmer a soldier and a soldier a farmer. If a person is\nunable to be grateful for Allah\u2019s blessing that He has raised his status\nabove that of a farmer, at the very least he must prevent himself from\nharming and oppressing that farmer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Implicitly, As-Subki was alluding to the arbitrary behaviour of\nMamluk soldiers in their treatment of farmers. Therefore, he advised\nthem to be gentle and to treat farmers well.<\/p>",
