Shangri-La union executives seek international support<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Shangri-La Independent Worker Union (SPMS)
\nis looking for international support in its fight against
\nShangri-La Hotel management.<\/p>\n
SPMS secretary Odie Hudiyanto told The Jakarta Post on Monday
\nthat they were continuing the struggle to regain their jobs by
\nfiling a suit through the International Labor Organization (ILO).<\/p>\n
\"The International Union of Food Workers (IUF), which has
\nmembers in 130 countries, has filed a suit against the Indonesian
\ngovernment through ILO,\" Odie claimed.<\/p>\n
According to Odie, the director of the International Labor
\nStandards Department at the ILO Office in Geneva, Jean Claude
\nJaviller, had sent a letter to the Ministry of Manpower and
\nTrasmigration on March 2 requesting that the government seriously
\nendeavor to resolve the dispute.<\/p>\n
SPMS claimed that Shangri-La Hotel management violated a 1998
\nILO convention which the Indonesian government is bound to
\nuphold.<\/p>\n
The dispute centers on the employees' demands for a salary
\nrise, as well as a higher share of income from service charges
\nand a pension fund.<\/p>\n
Workers commenced occupation of the hotel on Dec. 22, forcing
\nmanagement to suspend operations for nearly three months.<\/p>\n
The hotel has since reopened, while dismissal of the workers
\naffiliated with SPMS are going through an arbitration process at
\nthe government-sanctioned Central Committee for the Settlement of
\nLabor Disputes (P4P).<\/p>\n
The committee has yet to hand down its verdict.<\/p>\n
According to Odie, only 232 SPMS members have officially
\nresigned from the hotel, while 273 others continue to demand
\nreinstatement.<\/p>\n
Odie said hotel management had also filed a lawsuit against
\nthe striking workers, with the South Jakarta District Court,
\ndemanding Rp 80 billion in damages.<\/p>\n
As the suit entered its third hearing on April 17, Odie
\nclaimed that the hotel's lawyer, Maqdir Ismail, asked SPMS
\nexecutives to negotiate and reconcile.<\/p>\n
\"We realize that the lawsuit was just aimed at spooking the
\nworkers,\" Odie said.<\/p>\n
Odie insisted that the remaining workers only want their jobs
\nback, no matter how much Shangri-La Hotel management offers them
