Shangri-La refuses to bow to ex-workers' demands<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): As a group of former Shangri-La workers
\ncontinued its demonstrations in front of the hotel demanding
\ntheir jobs back, the hotel management said on Thursday that re-
\nhiring was not a viable option.<\/p>\n
The hotel considers as final the decision of the government-
\nsanctioned Central Committee for the Settlement of Labor Disputes
\nin May to allow the Shangri-La to lay off its protesting workers,
\nand therefore considers the prolonged issue to be settled ,
\naccording to senior manager Wastu Widanto.<\/p>\n
The hotel refused to rehire the 81 people as they had violated
\nits working agreement, he said.<\/p>\n
An article in the working agreement signed by all of the
\nhotel's workers stipulated that a worker would be subject to
\ndismissal if the person was engaged in any kind of demonstration
\nagainst the hotel.<\/p>\n
A total of 606 workers were in dispute with the hotel over
\ntheir demands for better working conditions.<\/p>\n
They staged a protest in December last year, causing the hotel
\nto halt its operations for three months.<\/p>\n
Currently there are 81 ex-workers belonging to the Shangri-La
\nIndependent Labor Union (SPSM) who are contesting the Committee's
\ndecision as they continue to demand to be rehired, while the
\nrest have opted to resign and receive settlement fees from the
\nhotel.<\/p>\n
Valentinus Wagiyo, the leader of the SPSM told The Jakarta
\nPost that, until management agreed to meet them, the SPMS would
\ncontinue to protest in front of the hotel at least four times a
\nweek.<\/p>\n
He said the 81 ex-workers were also demanding to have their
\nreputations cleared by the Shangri-La, as they were now facing
\ndifficulties in finding jobs elsewhere.<\/p>\n
SPSM claimed that the Shangri-La had issued a \"black list\"
\ncontaining the names of people who had participated in the
\ndemonstrations.<\/p>\n
Shangri-La denied the allegation, saying that the hotel would
\nnever do such a thing.<\/p>\n
Commenting on the demonstration, the Shangri-La said it was
\nnot bothered by it, as long as protestors were not entering the
\nhotel's compound.<\/p>\n
\"It's their right to have a demonstration, we're not the least
\nconcerned with it... usually there are just around 12 of them
\nanyway,\" Wastu remarked.<\/p>",
