Sewage dumped into Tangerang rivers<\/p>\n

Truck drivers of both Tangerang regency and municipal
\nenvironmental agencies dump untreated sewage in canals and rivers
\ncrossing the Tangerang city.<\/p>\n
This occurrence was witnessed by The Jakarta Post over the
\nweekend when the drivers dumped raw sewage into the Sipon canal
\non Jl. TMP Taruna, Tangerang, although there was an announcement
\nboard banning the dumping of sewage in the river.<\/p>\n
The practice is incongruous considering that the duty of both
\nagencies is to maintain the environment and to prevent damage to
\nand pollution of the environment.<\/p>\n
One of the drivers, told the Post that they usually carried
\nthe waste to a 40,000-square-meter household waste treatment site
\nthat has eight oxidation ponds in Perumnas Karawaci.<\/p>\n
\"Since the road access to the site is damaged, drivers are
\nreluctant to go there and instead have opted to dispose of the
\nsewage here,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The Tangerang municipal agency chief, Maryoso, could not be
\nreached for comment. His staff said Maryoso rarely came to the
\noffice.<\/p>\n
Truck drivers started their dumping activities at 8 a.m. and
\nended at 3 p.m.<\/p>\n
Trucks appeared from the direction of Jl. LP Pemuda and Jl.
\nTMP Taruna. The drivers then parked their trucks by the canal
\nbank under a shady tree. Both the driver and his assistant then
\npulled out a pipe and directed it into the 1.5 meter wide canal.<\/p>\n
A few minutes later, the sewage was piped into the canal which
\nquickly turned dark.<\/p>\n
Madsuni, a 56-year-old resident who lives near the site, said
\nat least 15 trucks dump sewage into the canal every day.<\/p>\n
\"One truck usually dumps sewage three times a day. If there
\nare 15 trucks on average, dumping sewage three times a day, the
\ncanal that flows into the Cisadane river must accommodate sewage
\nfrom 45 trucks per day,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"I think the waste disposal into the canal is potentially
\ndamaging to the environment and has polluted the Cisadane river
\nfrom which the Tangerang tap water company (PDAM) take water for
\nhousehold consumption.\"<\/p>\n
For Acang, a 45-year-old food vendor near the site, the odor
\nresulting from the dumping is an annoyance to him and his
\ncustomers.<\/p>\n
\"The bad odor can even stick to your clothes. If you don't
\nbelieve me, go and stand there for five minutes. Your clothes
\nwill stink,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"I don't understand why the agencies dump sewage into the
\nriver. My business here is disturbed by the smell and the dumping
\nbut I cannot do anything to stop them.\"<\/p>",
