Seven women quit PAN candidacies<\/p>\n
MEDAN: At least seven of 14 female National Mandate Party
\n(PAN) legislative candidates in North Sumatra have resigned
\nbecause of their low rankings on party lists.<\/p>\n
Three other candidates, currently on a haj pilgrimage to
\nMecca, Saudi Arabia, are likely to follow suit after they return
\nhome next month.<\/p>\n
The move was in protest against the decision by North
\nSumatra's PAN board, who ranked the candidates lowly on the party
\nlists, meaning they were unlikely to get elected.<\/p>\n
\"We are disappointed because we have just become token
\ncandidates, even though PAN leader Amien Rais is a figure who
\nstruggles for a 30 percent quota for women (as legislators).<\/p>\n
\"None of us have been given high rankings. It's hypocrisy from
\nthe PAN executives in North Sumatra,\" said candidate Rita Wizni,
\nwho chairs the PAN women's forum in the province.<\/p>\n
She said the remaining four women's candidates would not
\nresign as local PAN leaders continued to persuade them not to
\nchange their minds.<\/p>\n
Rita said that, apart from herself, the six others who had
\ntendered their resignations were Nur Rahmah Amini, Mutia Tumoloh,
\nReni Sembiring, Ade Kaifin Suryani, Kartini Arifin and Yoan Citra
