        "content": "<p>Seven top businessmen named as special business envoys<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): President B.J. Habibie will appoint seven of the<br>\ncountry's top businessmen as special envoys with ambassadorial<br>\nrank to help promote the Indonesian economy abroad and improve<br>\nforeign investor confidence.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the Indonesian Chambers of Commerce and Industry<br>\n(Kadin) Aburizal Bakrie told reporters after meeting with the<br>\nPresident yesterday that the new envoys would be James Riady,<br>\nHashim S. Djojohadikusumo, A.A. Baramuli, Suryo Sulistio,<br>\nMarimutu Sinivasan, Iman Taufik and Muchrim Hakim.<\/p>\n<p>James Riady, chairman of the country's widely-diversified<br>\nLippo Group, will become a special envoy to China, Hong Kong,<br>\nTaiwan, Australia and New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Hashim Djojohadikusumo, son of senior economist Sumitro<br>\nDjojohadikusumo and chairman of the Tirtamas Group, will be in<br>\ncharge of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>A.A. Baramuli, a businessman and current chairman of the Asian<br>\nChambers of Commerce Committee, will be a special envoy to East<br>\nAsia, including Japan and South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Marimutu Sinivasan, chairman of the country's giant Texmaco<br>\nGroup, will handle South Asia, including India.<\/p>\n<p>Iman Taufik, Kadin's deputy chairman, will be responsible for<br>\nmember countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations<br>\n(ASEAN).<\/p>\n<p>Suryo Sulistio, also the chamber's deputy chairman, will be in<br>\ncharge of the United States and Muchrim Hakim. also a Kadin<br>\nexecutive, will handle the Middle East and Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Aburizal said yesterday that all the ambassadors had good<br>\nrelations with the business communities in the countries to which<br>\nthey would be assigned.<\/p>\n<p>\"But the business ambassadors will pay their travel expenses<br>\nout of their own pockets because the government does not have<br>\nenough money to finance their missions,\" Aburizal said.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the country's mounting private sector debt,<br>\nAburizal said that most companies were facing problems meeting<br>\ndebt payments because their value had quadrupled in rupiah terms.<\/p>\n<p>\"There is not a single major company that is free from<br>\nproblems relating to their foreign debts,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>The government announced on Monday that Indonesian private<br>\nsector debts due to mature in the current fiscal year totaled<br>\nUS$29.2 billion. But their repayment will be rescheduled to eight<br>\nyears, including three years of grace period. (aly\/prb)<\/p>",
