Seven students face jail terms for murder<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A state prosecutor asked the Central Jakarta
\nDistrict Court yesterday to send seven high school students to
\njail for their alleged roles in a brawl on December that resulted
\nin the death of one student.<\/p>\n
Charged under Article 170 of the Criminal Code, the seven
\nstudents, all 18, could face a maximum 12 years in prison if
\nfound guilty.<\/p>\n
The students on trial were identified as Doni Rossiyana,
\nMahesa Chandra Tambunan, Zulachyar, Effendi, Abdi Riva'i, Fadli
\nIlhami and Wibowo.<\/p>\n
All of the young defendants are students of SMU VII senior
\nhigh school in Kebon Kacang, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Lukimanto demanded four-year jail terms for all of
\nthem except Doni Rossiyana, who is also charged for illegally
\npossessing a sharp weapon.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor demanded six years' imprisonment for Doni.<\/p>\n
The December brawl involved students of two senior high
\nschools, SMU VII and STM 13, in Kebon Kacang district.<\/p>\n
The victim, Adnan Fauzi, was a student of STM 13 technical
\nhigh school.<\/p>\n
In previous court sessions, five of the defendants admitted
\ntheir role in beating Adnan, and Doni admitted he stabbed the
\nvictim, while Mahesa denied the charge, saying he was hit first
\nbefore he beat the victim.<\/p>\n
Lukimanto said the defendants deserved punishment because they
\ncaused the death of a human being.<\/p>\n
He also said a lighter sentence was asked for them because the
\ndefendants admitted their crime, showed remorse, were still very
\nyoung and were never convicted of a crime before.<\/p>\n
"Besides that, the defendants' parents met with the victim's
\nfamily and gave them money, which was accepted by the victim's
\nrelatives," he said.<\/p>\n
After prosecutors read the sentence demand, all of the
\ndefendants burst into tears, saying they were very sorry for what
\nthey did.<\/p>\n
Presiding Judge Subardi said they should not shed any tears
\nbecause what they are facing now is nothing compared to the
\nfeelings the victim's family feels every day.<\/p>\n
"You will all spend time in jail, but your families and
\nfriends can visit you anytime. They will also be able to see you
\nwhen you are free. But what about the victim's family? They will
\nnever see Adnan again," Subardi said harshly.<\/p>\n
After the session, the students' parents and families sobbed
\nand embraced them and accompanied them to the detention cell of
\nthe courthouse.<\/p>\n
The trial was adjourned until next week for the defense
