Seven-month prison term sought for two activists<\/p>\n

Two university students are both facing a possible seven-month
\njail sentence for allegedly inciting chaos during a demonstration
\nagainst the fuel price hike in June.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Lukimanto demanded the sentence on Monday during
\nthe trial of Mixilmina Munir, alias Mixil, 25, and Aris Wardoyo,
\n22 at the South Jakarta District Court.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor said that the sentence should be reduced by the
\nperiod the defendants had already spent in detention.<\/p>\n
The defendants, both City Forum (Forkot) activists, have been
\nin detention since June 17.<\/p>\n
Mixil, a student of the State Institute of Islamic Studies
\n(IAIN), and Aris, of the Computer and Information Technology
\nInstitute (STMIK) staged a protest against the fuel price hike on
\nJune 16 outside Lebak Bulus bus terminal in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Mixil stopped public minivan drivers who were passing his
\ncampus in Ciputat and asked them to join the protest in Lebak
\nBulus (bus terminal),\" the prosecutor told the hearing, presided
\nover by Judge Abdul Madjid.<\/p>\n
Mixil and other protesters carried banners saying, \"The fuel
\nprice is up, (other) prices are up, let's fight it\", \"The people
\nare starving\" and \"What will people eat if all prices go up?\".<\/p>\n
The prosecutor said that Aris, meanwhile, led 100 drivers of
\nbajaj (three-wheeled motorized vehicles) outside his campus in
\nthe Radio Dalam area, South Jakarta. Later they joined the
\nprotest in Lebak Bulus.<\/p>\n
Several police officers arrived to disperse the demonstration,
\nbut Aris said to the protesters, \"don't be afraid of police
\nofficers\", the prosecutor said. Aris was then arrested by the
\npolice.<\/p>\n
\"At that time, Mixil threw a stone at the officers and he was
\nfollowed by other protesters, which turned the demonstration into
\na riot,\" Lukimanto said.<\/p>\n
The defendants were charged under Article 160 of the Criminal
\nCode on inciting chaos and Article 214, Paragraph 1 on defying
\nsecurity officers.<\/p>\n
A number of Forkot members who had repeatedly attended the
\ntrial sessions in support of the defendants protested noisily
\nwhen the sentence demand was made.<\/p>\n
The court will resume on Wednesday to hear the defense's
\nstatement.<\/p>",
