Seven killed in Mamuju clashes<\/p>\n

Seven people were killed and several others seriously injured
\nin a series of violent clashes among villagers in Batuampa
\nvillage, Mamuju regency, some 470 kilometers north of the
\nprovincial capital of Makassar.<\/p>\n
Adj. Sr. Comr. Johny S. Supu, chief of the Mamuju Police
\nPrecinct told The Jakarta Post by telephone on Friday that two
\nvictims were killed in the first clash that occurred on Wednesday
\nwhile five others died during the following days.<\/p>\n
\"The local police have deployed a company of security
\npersonnel but the village is still in a tense calm,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the police were still on alert as the two conflicting
\nvillages had traded threats of attacks.<\/p>\n
\"We have held dialogs with local religious figures to help
\nprevent the conflict from spreading to other villages,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The dead victims were Hamdan, Sjafar, Hasanuddin, Gondrong,
\nKamal, Nasir and Iskandar. Several injured victims were still
\nundergoing intensive treatment in the general hospital in the
\nregency, he said.<\/p>\n
Johny said the clash was triggered by a scuffle between two
\nyouths and it extended to a series of clashes between two bigger
\ngroups in the village.<\/p>\n
\"Eyewitnesses said that the riots were triggered by a quarrel
\nbetween two youths,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Asked about suspects, Johny said no arrests had been made
\nbecause a thorough investigation was still in progress.<\/p>\n
\"According to eyewitnesses, Hamdan and Sjafar instigated the
\nclash but they were killed in the incident,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the police have interviewed 12 villagers who witnessed
\nthe incident but they could not be declared as suspects as the
\npolice were still collecting evidence.<\/p>",
