Seven people have died in the tragic landslide at Zone IV of the\nBantar Gebang Waste Treatment Site (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java, with all\nvictims now accounted for. The casualties were buried under a\n50-metre-high garbage mountain that collapsed on Sunday, 8 March 2026 at\n14:30 WIB.<\/p>\n
Of 13 people at the location when the incident occurred, six were\nrescued alive whilst seven perished. According to Brigadier General\nHenik Maryanto, Head of Battalion D SAR Operations at Metro Jaya Police,\nrescue teams discovered the final victim in the debris zone on Monday, 9\nMarch 2026 at 23:26 WIB. The body was immediately evacuated and\ntransported to Police Hospital Kramat Jati for further\nidentification.<\/p>\n
Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency\n(KLH\/BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq described the tragedy as a stark warning\nto Jakarta\u2019s provincial government to immediately cease open-dumping\nwaste management practices, which continue to endanger residents and\nworkers. He stated that such incidents should not occur if waste\nmanagement followed proper regulations. \u201cBantar Gebang must serve as a\nlesson for us all to immediately reform, for the sake of human life and\nenvironmental preservation,\u201d Hanif said.<\/p>\n
According to Metro Bekasi Police Chief Brigadier General Kusumo, the\nincident occurred suddenly. Witnesses heard residents shouting about the\nlandslide before seeing the garbage mountain suddenly collapse, blocking\nthe road and crushing a shop and several waste trucks.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung attributed the landslide to extreme\nrainfall that saturated the waste surface, causing it to become slippery\nand subsequently collapse. The rainfall on Sunday measured 264\nmillimetres per day, among the highest recorded in Jakarta. The water\nthat seeped into the waste caused it to slide and collapse downward. The\nlandslide occurred in Zone 4A at 14:30 and resulted in a 40-metre\nstretch of the operational road and Ciketing River being covered with\nwaste.<\/p>\n
In response, the Jakarta provincial government has temporarily closed\nZone 4A at the Bantar Gebang facility.
