        "content": "<p>Seven 'boat people' arrive in Australia<\/p>\n<p>AUSTRALIA: Seven people claiming to be Indonesians landed a<br>\nfishing boat on a remote northwestern Australian beach and asked<br>\nlocals for directions to the nearest city, the government said on<br>\nMonday.<\/p>\n<p>The four men, one woman and two infants arrived in a small<br>\nboat at Honeymoon Beach in the far north of Western Australia<br>\nstate on Saturday, and have been detained by the Immigration<br>\nDepartment.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities tethered their small vessel to a naval patrol<br>\nboat.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone said the group, who<br>\nclaimed they were from the Indonesian province of West Timor --<br>\nabout 500 kilometers across the Timor Sea -- had not asked for<br>\nasylum.<\/p>\n<p>If they seek protection, they will be the first asylum seekers<br>\napprehended in Australia in more than two years.<\/p>\n<p>Asylum Seeker Resource Center spokeswoman Pamela Curr said she<br>\nsuspected they would ask to stay.<\/p>\n<p>\"They may not have asked for the specific form indicating they<br>\nwere designated asylum seekers, but if they're coming down in a<br>\nlittle fishing boat from West Timor, they're seeking protection,\"<br>\nshe said.<\/p>\n<p>Curr did not elaborate on why they might have fled Indonesia.<br>\n--AP<\/p>",
