Settling corruption cases<\/p>\n
The government said in an official statement that there is no
\nproof that Minister of Transportation Haryanto Dhanutirto used
\nstate money for private purposes. Therefore, after a long process
\nwhich was supervised by Vice President Try Sutrisno, President
\nSoeharto decided to consider the case closed.<\/p>\n
The public, which is prone to ask what actually lay behind the
\ndisclosure of possible irregularities at the ministry, might be
\nconfused by the statement which was given by Minister\/State
\nSecretary Moerdiono. On the one hand, the minister said the case
\ninvolving Minister of Transportation Haryanto Dhanutirto was
\nconsidered closed. On the other hand, however, he said that parts
\nof the report submitted by the inspector general of development
\nand investigated by the Vice President were true.<\/p>\n
Aside from this case of suspected irregularities by Haryanto,
\nwhich is considered closed, the State Audit Board has uncovered
\n884 cases involving misuse of state money. The chairman of the
\nGolkar executive board, Harmoko, has already instructed the
\nGolkar faction in the House of Representatives to follow up the
\nboard's findings. If these cases prove to be supported by solid
\nevidence, we of course hope that they will not be settled in the
\nsame manner as the Haryanto case.<\/p>\n
