The Setara Institute has unveiled the five provinces with the highest\nrates of religion-based violence. West Java (Jabar) emerges as the\nprovince with the highest number of religion-based violence incidents,\nrecording 56 cases of violence.<\/p>\n
\u201cWest Java continues to occupy the top position for cases of\nviolations of religious freedom and belief,\u201d said Harkirtan Kaur,\nresearcher on religious freedom and belief at Setara Institute, in the\nMenteng area, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (10 March 2026).<\/p>\n
Kaur revealed the other provinces among the top five regarding\nreligious freedom violations. Aceh ranks second with 23 incidents.<\/p>\n
\u201cAceh follows in second position with 23 incidents, followed by East\nJava with 18 incidents, Central Java with 13 incidents, and DKI Jakarta\nwith 12 incidents,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The Setara Institute notes that intolerance remains high in West\nJava. According to Kaur, there are still a number of intolerant groups\nperpetuating majoritarianism.<\/p>\n
\u201cIntolerance incidents occur at the grassroots community level, where\nintolerant groups continue to attempt to perpetuate majoritarian\npractices,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
This situation, according to her, restricts the religious freedom of\nminority citizens. Minority residents also face difficulties in\nexpressing their religion.<\/p>\n
