Service improvement urgent<\/p>\n
Of late, the cellular phone market has been suffering a rather
\nunhealthy condition. First, a black market has developed to upset
\nofficial market prices. Second, consumer complaints about the
\nquality of the service provided by operators, particularly as
\nrelated to the high rate of unsuccessful calls, have been
\nincreasing. This is an indication that many operators are not
\nready to deliver the services they are expected to provide, which
\nnaturally is most harmful to the consumer.<\/p>\n
The more sophisticated the equipment and the more extensive
\nthe network that is provided by the operator, the wider the reach
\nof the communications system will be for the consumer. However,
\nsuch a network is not easy to develop because of the huge
\ninvestment involved and the fact that businessmen are as yet not
\ntoo certain of the market potentials. It is a pity that in trying
\nto attract as many customers as possible operators sometimes try
\nto sell cellular phones without considering their network's
\ncapacity.<\/p>\n
The many complaints that are heard at present signal that
\nservices must be improved immediately or the fate of cellular
\nphone services in this country may come to resemble the services
\nof our conventional telephone system. The number of Telkom
\nsubscribers continues to increase. So, however, does the
\ncomplexity of the public's complaints.<\/p>\n
