Serpong-P. Aren Barat new toll road opens<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Serpong-Pondok Aren Barat toll road, the
\nfirst part of the planned toll road between Jakarta and Bumi
\nSerpong Damai (BSD) housing complex, is scheduled to start
\noperation on Tuesday, an official said.<\/p>\n
The director general of road construction of the Ministry of
\nPublic Works, Tjuk Sudarsono, said on Friday that initially the
\n6.9-kilometer toll road section was intended only for vehicles in
\nthe group I classification, namely sedans, jeeps, small trucks
\nand minibuses.<\/p>\n
\"This decision was taken as the road is not yet able to serve
\nheavier vehicles,\" Sudarsono was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
He explained that in line with Presidential Decree No. 11\/1999
\ndated Jan. 27, the toll for the new road for group I vehicles was
\nset at Rp 2,000.<\/p>\n
The toll has been set at Rp 3,500 for vehicles in the group
\nIIA classification for bigger trucks or buses, and Rp 4,500 for
\nlarger trucks and buses.<\/p>\n
\"Tolls for other groups of vehicles will be effective only
\nafter all facilities to support them on the toll road is
\ncompleted,\" he said.<\/p>\n
When asked whether the tolls were not too expensive, he said
\nthat they had been calculated in line with the existing formula
\nand had been discussed with members of the House of
\nRepresentatives.<\/p>\n
Commenting on the construction of the second part of the
\nproject, stretching 5.9 kilometers between Pondok Aren and
\nUlujami in South Jakarta, Sudarsono said it was initially planned
\nthat it would be built by state-owned highway corporation PT Jasa
\nMarga.<\/p>\n
But due to a lack of funds, PT Jasa Marga would only build
\nabout 2.5 kilometers of it between Pondok Aren and Viaduct
\nBintaro.<\/p>\n
The rest -- between Viaduct Bintaro and Ulujami -- would be
\noffered to private companies, he said.<\/p>\n
PT Jasa Marga's spokesman David Wijayanto explained that the
\nSerpong-Pondok Aren Barat toll road section was built at a cost
\nof Rp 249 billion by a consortium, the members of which include
\nPT Bumi Serpong Damai, the developer of the BSD housing complex,
\nand PT Jaya Real Property, among others.<\/p>\n
In its cooperation with PT Jasa Marga, the project was built
\non a build-operate-and-transfer scheme with a concession period
\nof 27 years.<\/p>\n
The operation of the toll road is expected to further develop
\nthe BSD area, where there is an increasing number of foreign
