Serious investigation on journalist murder sought<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Senior media officials urged the government
\nyesterday to investigate last week's murder of a journalist in
\nthe West Kalimantan capital of Pontianak.<\/p>\n
The information ministry's director general of press and
\ngraphics, Subrata, and the Indonesian Journalists Association's
\nsecretary general, Parni Hadi, said the police's investigation
\nshould be impartial and the results made public.<\/p>\n
A correspondent from Jakarta's Sinar Pagi crime daily,
\nNaimullah, 42, was found dead Saturday in Pontianak's northern
\noutskirts.<\/p>\n
His body was found in the back seat of his car which was
\nparked on a beach. He had injuries to his head, neck, chest and
\nwrists.<\/p>\n
A witness said he saw four men run from Maiullah's car to a
\nget away car and escape.<\/p>\n
Some of his colleagues believed his death was connected to his
\narticles on timber smuggling and theft in West Kalimantan that
\nallegedly involved officials.<\/p>\n
Naimullah was the third Indonesian journalists murdered in the
\npast two years.<\/p>\n
A Yogyakarta-based Bernas daily journalist, Fuad Muhammad
\nSyafruddin, alias Udin, was murdered last year.<\/p>\n
His murder was allegedly connected with his reports on
\ncorruption in the Bantul regency administration.<\/p>\n
The dossiers on Dwi Sumaji, Udin's alleged murderer, were
\nsubmitted to the Bantul District Court on July 15 despite
\naccusations of an attempted police cover up.<\/p>\n
A trial date has not yet been set.<\/p>\n
Last month, Sayuti Haji Buchori, a journalist for the
\nUjungpandang-based Pos Makassar was found unconscious, with
\nwounds to his head and neck, on Jl. Garuda in Luwu subdistrict
\nabout midday on June 9.<\/p>\n
He died in hospital later the same day.<\/p>\n
Police denied his death had something to do with his reports
\non corruption in Luwu subdistrict, saying witnesses saw him fall
\noff his motorbike while trying to avoid an oncoming truck.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Journalists Association South Sulawesi chapter
\nhas formed its own fact-finding team to investigate.<\/p>\n
Pos Makassar has referred the case to a team of lawyers to
\nprobe further.<\/p>\n
Subrata called on the public not to hastily conclude that
\nNaimullah's death was connected to his articles and to let the
