Sergeant's murder almost solved<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City Police have almost completed their
\ninvestigation into the shooting, last Friday, of Chief Sgt.
\nKamino at a low-cost apartment in Pejompongan, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said yesterday
\nthat his office had encountered no difficulties in collecting the
\navailable information and evidence to solve the case.<\/p>\n
"We've questioned the suspect, an alleged heroin dealer, and
\nKamino's colleagues." he said. "We've also questioned a resident
\nand the apartment superintendent."<\/p>\n
"We're just waiting for some other information and evidence
\nbefore we complete the investigation."<\/p>\n
Kamino, 37, was a member of the National Police's elite Mobile
\nBrigade but he had been seconded to the Jakarta Police Detective
\nUnit for the past three years.<\/p>\n
Preliminary police investigations have revealed that Kamino,
\nthe father of a toddle, was shot in the back during a police raid
\nat an apartment believed to be owned by a drug dealer.<\/p>\n
The officer died at the police hospital in Kramat Jati, East
\nJakarta, a couple of hours after the shooting about 6:30 a.m.
\nFriday.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said the alleged heroin dealer, identified as Boyke,
\nalias Brewok, 28, was arrested several minutes after the shooting
\nin front of a shop in the apartment complex.<\/p>\n
While Brewok was trying to flee police he shot Kamino, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"It was possible if the suspect seized the gun from an officer
\nand fired a single shot into the team of police officers and
\nKamino was the one wounded."<\/p>\n
However, he declined to provide further details on the arrest
\nof Brewok.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said that the officers had raided the apartment on
\nthe fourth floor and arrested Boyke.<\/p>\n
But Boyke tried to break away from Kamino and a fellow
\nofficer, who were taking the suspect to a police car, he said.<\/p>\n
However, it remains unclear how the suspected drug dealer
\nmanaged to get hold of the gun and then shoot Kamino.<\/p>\n
"Investigations might just prove that it was not Boyke who
\nshot Kamino," he said. "But it's incorrect to say that Kamino was
\nshot by a colleague who fired the gun recklessly."<\/p>\n
He was commenting on several media reports, based on
\ninformation supplied by other occupants of the apartment, that
\nsaid Kamino was mistakenly shot by a fellow officer, who was
\nidentified only as Sgt. Maj. Pa.<\/p>\n
Residents at the scene told journalists on Sunday a completely
\ndifferent story to the police version of events surrounding the
\narrest of Boyke and the fatal shooting.<\/p>\n
Some said that the suspect was arrested in his apartment,
\nwhile others said Boyke was arrested at a security guard's booth
\nnear the parking lot.<\/p>\n
They said that more than two officers chased after Boyke when
\nhe tried to flee but confirmed that the shooting took place in
\nfront of a shop, about 25 meters from the security guard's booth.<\/p>\n
A local resident, who asked for anonymity said: "We heard that
\nthe officer was mistakenly shot by a colleague who was running
\nbehind the officer while they were chasing Boyke."<\/p>\n
The residents also said they did not know about Boyke's
\npossible involvement with narcotics.<\/p>\n
Boyke was rarely involved in neighborhood activities but was
\nquite notorious for his ill-manners, they said.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said police had been searching for Boyke in relation
\nto several crimes he allegedly committed, including robberies and
\nheroin trafficking.<\/p>\n
Police said they had arrested a woman for possessing five
\npackages of heroin when she visited Boyke at the City Police
\nstation on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said the woman, identified as Lala, was arrested for
\nattempting to smuggle the heroin into the detention center.<\/p>\n
"She put the heroin inside a cigarette pack. She brought the
\nheroin especially for Boyke. Maybe he is an addict."<\/p>\n
Kamino's remains were not sent to Cipto Mangunkusumo General
\nHospital for a postmortem examination but taken to his hometown
\nin Purworejo, Central Java, on Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said there was no need to take the body to the Cipto
\nhospital because doctors at the police hospital in Kramat Jati
\nwere also qualified to do the examination.<\/p>\n
But he did not say whether or not Kamino's body had been
\nexamined by doctors at the police hospital.<\/p>\n
Cipto hospital and the Indonesian Red Cross Hospital in Bogor,
\nWest Java, are the only institutions which have the authority to
\nissue a postmortem certificate. (cst)<\/p>",
