        "content": "<p>Senayan vendors to be relocated<\/p>\n<p>Zakki Hakim, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>\"We've been hearing for some time that the east parking lot is to<br>\nbe converted into something they're calling an urban forest, but<br>\nit has never happened,\" said Nazirman, a vendor who has been<br>\nselling sportswear for two years at the east parking lot in the<br>\nBung Karno Sports Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, over the<br>\nweek end.<\/p>\n<p>He is one of hundreds of vendors currently earning their<br>\nliving at the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>Nazirman, 27, expressed the hope that the Senayan management<br>\nwould set aside a another area for the vendors if the plan came<br>\nto fruition.<\/p>\n<p>His hope has apparently been responded to by the management,<br>\nwhich says it plans to relocate the swelling ranks of vendors to<br>\nspecially designated areas.<\/p>\n<p>The relocation has been necessitated as a result of a project<br>\nto convert the east parking lot into a \"green oasis\".<\/p>\n<p>Senayan managing director Yasidi Hambali told The Jakarta Post<br>\nrecently that basically no vendors were allowed to trade inside<br>\nthe complex. To avoid unrest, however, the management would set<br>\naside a number of place for some of the street vendors.<\/p>\n<p>He said that as a result the 279-hectare complex would be free<br>\nfrom (unregistered) vendors and would have an appropriate<br>\nambience as a national heritage center -- something that had been<br>\nurged recently by the House of Representatives, the city<br>\nadministration and the State Secretariat, to which the Senayan<br>\nmanagement is accountable.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that the Senayan management would commence the Rp<br>\n20 billion (US$2.35 million) project next month.<\/p>\n<p>The project, to be finished in eight months time, will involve<br>\nremoving the asphalt from the 80,000-square-meter parking lot,<br>\nthe drilling of 80 artesian wells, fencing work and the planting<br>\nof 500,000 trees.<\/p>",
