        "content": "<p>Senayan vendors protest eviction<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: Dozens of vendors from the Senayan Vendors<br>\nAssociation (HPSJ) staged a protest at the City Council on<br>\nFriday, demanding that the management of the Bung Karno Sports<br>\nComplex halt plans to evict them.<\/p>\n<p>HPSJ secretary-general Deden M. Ilham said the City Council in<br>\nMay asked the management of the sports complex not to evict the<br>\nvendors, \"but apparently the management ignored this request as,<br>\nin their last notice, they said the plan would proceed\".<\/p>\n<p>The management plans to evict the vendors from the eastern<br>\nparking lot of the sports complex and plant trees in the area.<\/p>\n<p>\"Earlier the management wanted to evict us because of people<br>\nillegally parking their cars there and the crime in the area, now<br>\nthey are using the environmental issue .... If the management<br>\ninsists on evicting us, small vendors, why do they allow the<br>\ncafes to stay open?\" Deden asked.<\/p>\n<p>The eastern parking lot of the sports complex is a favorite<br>\ngathering place, and there are at least 5,000 vendors working in<br>\nthe area. -- JP<\/p>",
