        "content": "<p>Sempati staff seek redress<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): At least 250 laid-off employees of financially<br>\ntroubled Sempati Air pressed their demand yesterday for severance<br>\npay commensurate with manpower regulations if the private firm<br>\nultimately decides to dismiss them.<\/p>\n<p>They sought mediation with officials of the company controlled<br>\nby former president Soeharto's youngest son Hutomo Mandala Putra<br>\nat the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute office on Jl. Diponegoro,<br>\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>The employees' lawyer Surya Chandra said his clients demanded<br>\nthat severance pay should be set at the basic monthly salary<br>\nmultiplied by years of service and doubled, as regulated by the<br>\nMinistry of Manpower Decree No. 3\/1996.<\/p>\n<p>\"Although the company is badly affected by the economic<br>\ncrisis, the company should fulfill its obligation to give proper<br>\ncompensation,\" Surya of the Legal Aid Institute said.<\/p>\n<p>Sempati Air's human resource manager Isabella Soenarno argued<br>\nthat the company could only offer compensation amounting to one<br>\nmonth's salary multiplied by the years of service.<\/p>\n<p>\"We cannot meet the employees' demand because of the economic<br>\ncrisis.\"<\/p>\n<p>She said the company planned to dismiss 1,200 of its current<br>\nroster of 1,800 employees.<\/p>\n<p>The company has slashed its services to 31 international and<br>\ndomestic destinations to just seven domestic destinations, she<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are now operating only three airplanes of the 26 airplanes<br>\nbefore the economic crisis (that began last July),\" she said.<\/p>\n<p>One of the employees, Edon Sibarani, said he and his<br>\ncolleagues wanted the company to declare bankruptcy if it could<br>\nnot pay the severance pay required by the manpower decree.<\/p>\n<p>\"The company should sell its assets to pay us.\"<\/p>\n<p>He said the company suspended 700 employees between May and<br>\nJuly last year, and had provided them with compensation according<br>\nto the decree.<\/p>\n<p>About 1,300 employees were laid off in March and received 50<br>\npercent of their salaries, he said.
