Seminar to showcase successful leadership<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Army's Special Forces, General Electric and
\nPT Astra International have one thing in common -- good
\nleadership.<\/p>\n
The Foundation of Management Education and Development (YPPM)
\nis organizing a seminar next week on leadership in the future in
\nwhich these institutions will be showcased as examples of
\nsuccessful leadership.<\/p>\n
Next Wednesday's seminar is to commemorate the late T.B.
\nSimatupang, an intellectual and a military leader who helped
\nfound YPPM. He died in 1990.<\/p>\n
The seminar will look at the kind of leadership governments,
\nbusinesses and social organizations will need going into the next
\ncentury.<\/p>\n
The armed forces has supplied many leaders to government
\npositions which is a tribute to its education system, organizers
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The seminar will look at the preparations and the profiles of
\nleaders in elite military organizations like the Special Forces.<\/p>\n
It will also look at corporate leadership and what it means in
\ninternational corporations like General Electric.<\/p>\n
The seminar will examine how Astra applied GE's center for
\nleadership development concept by establishing the Astra
\nManagement Development Institute.<\/p>\n
Organizers cited management guru Peter F. Drucker who said
\nbusiness corporations could learn from social organizations about
\nhow to survive even though they were not profit oriented.<\/p>\n
\"Many management experts are surprised to find that non-
\ngovernmental organizations can operate smoothly and command
\nstrong loyalty from their members even though they are not as
\nwell rewarded as they would be in business,\" organizers said.<\/p>\n
Speakers in the seminar will include transmigration minister
\nSiswono Yudohusodo and Maj. Gen. Bambang Yudhoyono, assistant for
\nsociopolitical affairs to the armed forces' sociopolitical chief.<\/p>\n
Speakers from the business sector will be Singapore Telecoms
\nchairman Koh Boon Hwee and Astra International vice president B.
\nSubianto, while social organizations will be represented by
\nMalaysian AIDS Council president Marina Mahathir and Indonesian
\nlegislator Nafsiah Mboi. (09)<\/p>",
