\nScholars to discuss democracy in Asia and Europe<\/p>\n

Around 30 distinguished academics from Asia and Europe will
\ngather this week in Seoul, South Korea, to discuss the concept of
\ndemocracy in both continents and the possibility of preparing
\ncommon theoretical ground toward a universal definition, a
\nSingapore-based international foundation said.<\/p>\n
\"The scholars will provide an in-depth discussion on the usage
\nof the concept of democracy and an explanation of its realities
\nin their countries during an academic conference. They will also
\ndiscuss general and theoretical issues related to the conceptions
\nof democracy in Asia and Europe,\" Asia-Europe Foundation director
\nfor public affairs Albrecht Rothacher said in a statement sent to
\nThe Jakarta Post recently.<\/p>\n
The main aim of the two-day conference, titled Democracy in
\nAsia, Europe and the World: Toward a Universal Definition? is to
\nencourage Asian and European political scientists to analyze the
\ntheory and reality of democracy from a comparative perspective
\nand powwow the possibility of finding a common theoretical
\nground, Rathacher said.<\/p>\n
Prominent political scientists like Tatu Vanhanen from the
\nUniversity of Helsinki (Finland), Takashi Inoguchi from the
\nUniversity of Tokyo (Japan), Ferdinand Mueller-Rommel from the
\nUniversity of Lueneburg (Germany), Olivia Caoili from the
\nUniversity of the Philippines and Pratikno, the vice dean for
\nacademic affairs of Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, will be
\nattending the conference.<\/p>\n
South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Ki Moon-ban will
\ndeliver the keynote speech at the conference, which will be
\njointly organized by the ASEF and the KAIS.<\/p>\n
ASEF is an organization -- created by the Asia Europe Meeting
\n(ASEM) heads of state in 1997 -- that works for intellectual,
\ncultural, and people-to-people exchange among ASEM member
\ncountries in Asia and Europe with an aim to contribute to policy
\ndebate and strategic thinking on themes of current and future
\ninterregional importance between the two continents.<\/p>\n
KAIS is an academic association of South Korean researchers in
\nthe field of international studies. It was founded in 1956 and
\npublishes the Korean Journal of International Studies in Korean
\nand English.<\/p>",
