Seminar on ASEAN financial initiatives<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The ASEAN Business Forum, a nonprofit group
\nconsisting of firms from Association of Southeast Asian Nations
\n(ASEAN), is to stage a conference on ASEAN Financial Initiatives
\nfor the 21st Century in December.<\/p>\n
The ABF's executive director, Kho Hock Aun, said here
\nyesterday that the conference, co-organized by the ASEAN
\nsecretariat would be held in Kuala Lumpur from December 1-3 in
\ntandem with an exhibition on banking and finance. .<\/p>\n
Some of the world's top policy-makers and corporate executives
\nwill speak at the event, he said.<\/p>\n
Scheduled speakers include executives of the World Bank, the
\nInternational Monetary Fund and Moody's Asia-Pacific, he said.<\/p>\n
Kho added that ABF would also hold the Fifth ASEAN Achievement
\nAwards on Aug. 7, at the Shangri-la Hotel in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Two Indonesians will receive awards this year, businessman
\nAburizal Bakrie (ASEAN Businessperson of the Year) and Emil Salim
\n(Environmental Protection).<\/p>\n
Bakrie is the chairman of both the Indonesian Chamber of
\nCommerce and Industry and of the ASEAN Chamber of Commerce and
\nIndustry. He also chairs the diversified Bakrie Group.<\/p>\n
Emil Salim, former minister of population and environment, is
\nnow chairman of the board of trustees of the Indonesian
\nBiodiversity Foundation and the U.S.-based Council of Appropriate
\nTechnology.<\/p>\n
The awards are presented to outstanding individuals from ASEAN
\nfor 12 categories: architecture, business, community service,
\neducation, engineering, environmental protection, information
\ntechnology, medicine, research and development, science, sport
\nand visual and performing arts.<\/p>\n
Nominees must be ASEAN citizens who have made significant
\ncontributions to the community. Nominees are reviewed by a
\nselection committee and a short list is forwarded to a panel of
\njudges for the final decision.<\/p>\n
This awards have been held annually since 1992.<\/p>\n
Kho said the general public and selected national and regional
\norganizations and were invited to make nominations for this years
\nawards over the last two months.<\/p>\n
He said no award in architecture would be presented in 1997.
\n"Sometimes, it's hard to select a winner in certain fields."he
\nsaid.
\n Besides Bakrie and Emil Salim there have been six other
\nIndonesian winners since 1992: Didi Suwardi (engineering, 1992),
\nJohan Silas (engineering, 1993), Susi Susanti (sport, 1993 and
\n1994), Wiratman Wangsadinata (engineering, 1994), Aditya
\nIndradjaja (architecture, 1995) and Ibnu Sutowo (community
\nservice, 1995).<\/p>\n
As of last week, the ASEAN group has included nine countries,
\nBrunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines,
\nSingapore, Thailand and Vietnam. (icn)<\/p>",
