        "content": "<p>Seminar on ASEAN financial initiatives<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The ASEAN Business Forum, a nonprofit group<br>\nconsisting of firms from Association of Southeast Asian Nations<br>\n(ASEAN), is to stage a conference on ASEAN Financial Initiatives<br>\nfor the 21st Century in December.<\/p>\n<p>The ABF&apos;s executive director, Kho Hock Aun, said here<br>\nyesterday that the conference, co-organized by the ASEAN<br>\nsecretariat would be held in Kuala Lumpur from December 1-3 in<br>\ntandem with an exhibition on banking and finance. .<\/p>\n<p>Some of the world&apos;s top policy-makers and corporate executives<br>\nwill speak at the event, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Scheduled speakers include executives of the World Bank, the<br>\nInternational Monetary Fund and Moody&apos;s Asia-Pacific, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kho added that ABF would also hold the Fifth ASEAN Achievement<br>\nAwards on Aug. 7, at the Shangri-la Hotel in Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Two Indonesians will receive awards this year, businessman<br>\nAburizal Bakrie (ASEAN Businessperson of the Year) and Emil Salim<br>\n(Environmental Protection).<\/p>\n<p>Bakrie is the chairman of both the Indonesian Chamber of<br>\nCommerce and Industry and of the ASEAN Chamber of Commerce and<br>\nIndustry. He also chairs the diversified Bakrie Group.<\/p>\n<p>Emil Salim, former minister of population and environment, is<br>\nnow chairman of the board of trustees of the Indonesian<br>\nBiodiversity Foundation and the U.S.-based Council of Appropriate<br>\nTechnology.<\/p>\n<p>The awards are presented to outstanding individuals from ASEAN<br>\nfor 12 categories: architecture, business, community service,<br>\neducation, engineering, environmental protection, information<br>\ntechnology, medicine, research and development, science, sport<br>\nand visual and performing arts.<\/p>\n<p>Nominees must be ASEAN citizens who have made significant<br>\ncontributions to the community. Nominees are reviewed by a<br>\nselection committee and a short list is forwarded to a panel of<br>\njudges for the final decision.<\/p>\n<p>This awards have been held annually since 1992.<\/p>\n<p>Kho said the general public and selected national and regional<br>\norganizations and were invited to make nominations for this years<br>\nawards over the last two months.<\/p>\n<p>He said no award in architecture would be presented in 1997.<br>\n&quot;Sometimes, it&apos;s hard to select a winner in certain fields.&quot;he<br>\nsaid.<br>\n Besides Bakrie and Emil Salim there have been six other<br>\nIndonesian winners since 1992: Didi Suwardi (engineering, 1992),<br>\nJohan Silas (engineering, 1993), Susi Susanti (sport, 1993 and<br>\n1994), Wiratman Wangsadinata (engineering, 1994), Aditya<br>\nIndradjaja (architecture, 1995) and Ibnu Sutowo (community<br>\nservice, 1995).<\/p>\n<p>As of last week, the ASEAN group has included nine countries,<br>\nBrunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines,<br>\nSingapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
