        "content": "<p>Semester system to replace the quarterly scheme<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>The quarterly system currently being applied in the national<br>\neducation curriculum from elementary to senior high school will<br>\nbe replaced by the semester scheme starting next year, an<br>\nofficial said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Evaluating lessons using the semester system like in<br>\nuniversity will be more advantageous,\" the Ministry of National<br>\nEducation's director general of elementary and high school<br>\neducation, Indradjati, said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after presenting awards to winners of an essay<br>\nwriting contest on Korea, Indradjati said one of the advantages<br>\nwas that it would enable students to learn in depth over a longer<br>\nperiod of time, not in several stages followed by holidays like<br>\nin the current system.<\/p>\n<p>The semester system would also enable both teachers and<br>\nstudents to make better preparations for better evaluations,<br>\nIndradjati said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the new system would be less of a financial<br>\nburden to students' parents as only two textbooks would be used<br>\nper subject per year instead of the three per subject in the<br>\ncurrent system.<\/p>\n<p>\"Preparations for introducing the semester system are still<br>\nbeing made and its proposal has been advanced to the minister in<br>\nthe hope that it can be fully applied next year,\" he said as<br>\nquoted by Antara.<\/p>\n<p>In a related development, the Ministry of National Education<br>\nwill allow schools to decide for themselves whether to close for<br>\nan Idul Fitri holiday, an official said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Schools, whether public or private, can determined the<br>\narrangement of the Ramadhan holiday by themselves, as long as<br>\nthey don't sacrifice effective school days,\" Indradjati Sidi,<br>\ndirector general for elementary and secondary schools, said.<br>\nThe fasting month of Ramadhan starts in mid-November and ends<br>\nwith Idul Fitri on Dec. 16 and Dec. 17.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry will offer two options: either a long holiday at<br>\nthe end of Ramadhan, or a shorter holiday at the beginning of the<br>\nfasting month after which school would resume until the year-end<br>\nholiday, he announced after presenting the 2001 Essay Writing on<br>\nKorea awards.<\/p>\n<p>Schools that decide against the longer Ramadhan holiday could<br>\nhave a longer Christmas and year-end holiday.<\/p>\n<p>However, schools will be required to notify and coordinate<br>\nwith the their respective provincial-level offices of the<br>\nMinistry of National Education regarding their school holidays.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry will issue official letters to schools nationwide<br>\nregarding the matter.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, state schools were obliged to accept the<br>\ngovernment-set Idul Fitri holiday schedule. At one time, no state<br>\nschool was allowed to hold classes during the whole month of<br>\nRamadhan.<\/p>",
