Semeru spews hot lava<\/p>\n
LUMAJANG, East Java: Mount Semeru in East Java spewed hot lava
\non Sunday, but local residents living at the vicinity have
\ndecided to stay.<\/p>\n
Suparno, a staff at the local volcano monitoring office, said
\nSunday that the lava was expelled as far as 250 meters from the
\nmountain peak.<\/p>\n
The seismograph at the Candipuro monitoring post recorded 87
\nvolcanic eruptions with a maximum amplitude of 42 meters.<\/p>\n
Some minor eruptions were followed by a rise in water level in
\nthe Curah Kebokan and Curah Lenkong rivers.<\/p>\n
Amid the signs of volcanic eruption, local residents continued
\ntheir daily activities. They said that the lava was still far
\nfrom their homes.<\/p>\n
Suparno said that local residents would take refugee only if

JAYAPURA, Papua: The Trikora military command has asked the
\ngovernment of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to help Indonesia in
\ncombating separatist groups in the province.<\/p>\n
Secretary of the Trikora military command Brig. Gen. Wurdin
\nZainal said on Sunday that separatist groups were using border
\nareas as hideouts.<\/p>\n
According to Zainal, separatist groups often crossed the
\nborder to escape the Indonesian military (TNI).<\/p>\n
"Our members often find difficulties in chasing the separatist
\ngroups because they flee into PNG," Zainal said.<\/p>\n
He added that the request for help had been submitted to the
\nBorder Administration Officers in Vanimo so that they could take
\nany necessary actions.<\/p>\n
Zainal said PNG should prevent the separatist groups from

BANDUNG, West Java: Minister of National Education Abdul Malik
\nFajar expressed concerns on Saturday over the poor quality of the
\ncountry's universities and urged them to stop designing programs
\naimed at generating income.<\/p>\n
Malik Fajar noted that universities had been functioning like
\nstores, offering various programs and grades without improving
\ntheir quality.<\/p>\n
The minister suggested that universities develop a positive
\nimage for the people, "Because a positive image can create hope
\nfor the future," he said after inaugurating the rector of
\nPadjadjaran University here on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Himendra Wargadibrata was reelected rector for the next four
\nyears after serving in the same post for the 1998-2002 period.<\/p>\n
During the same occasion, the minister called for an increase
\nin the educational budget for elementary schools.<\/p>\n
He said that so far, the government had allocated 90 percent
\nof the educational budget towards universities, while elementary

\nbihalal (a post-Idul Fitri gathering) on Sunday, held by Acehnese

The event, which took place at Hall B of the Jakarta
\nFairground in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, aimed not only to
\nforgive each other but also to commemorate the signing of the
\ncessation of hostilities agreement on Dec. 9, 2002, between the
\nIndonesian government and the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM)
\nin Geneva.<\/p>\n
Tens of thousands of Acehnese hailing from Jakarta, Bogor,
\nTangerang, Bekasi and Banten began to arrive en masse at the
\nbuilding on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

\nSusilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Minister of Home Affairs Hari Sabarno,

Noted Islamic preacher Abdullah Gymnastiar in his sermon
\nexpressed hope that hostilities between the government and GAM
\nwould soon cease after the signing of the peace agreement and
\nthat they could later forge a cooperation for the benefit of the
