Semen Padang spin-off from Semen Gresik delayed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): West Sumatra community figures accused the
\ngovernment and PT Semen Gresik of colluding to cancel the
\nestablishment of a spin-off company, PT Semen Padang, a company
\nwidely anticipated by locals to provide an economic boost to the
\nprovince.<\/p>\n
A 40-member delegation from West Sumatra expressed
\ndisappointment with the result of official talks between the
\ngovernment, Semen Gresik and Cemex Indonesia on March 28, which
\nwere held in anticipation of the spin-off process.<\/p>\n
"We are very disappointed with the Coordinating Minister for
\nthe Economy Rizal Ramli and Nyoman Tjager, director general for
\nstate-owned enterprises, who did not even attend the meetings,"
\nsaid the chairman of the delegation, P. Simulie, in a meeting
\nwith House Speaker Akbar Tandjung here on Monday.<\/p>\n
He said Cemex, which holds shares in Semen Gresik, declined to
\ndiscuss the issue due to the absence of senior government
\nofficials in the meeting.<\/p>\n
They claimed that the planned spin-off of Semen Padang from
\nSemen Gresik is a transformation intended to enable the state-
\nowned company to contribute more to the provincial
\nadministration's income, since Semen Gresik was established on a
\nplot of land which traditionally belonged to locals.<\/p>\n
"We want Semen Padang to be a fund-raiser, not for troubled
\nSemen Gresik, but for development programs in West Sumatra,"
\nSimulie said.<\/p>\n
Afrizal, a member of the West Sumatra provincial legislative
\ncouncil, pointed out that both former president B.J. Habibie and
\nPresident Abdurrahman Wahid, who had recently visited the
\nprovincial capital of Padang, had expressed their support for the
\nidea.<\/p>\n
He said it was better for the government to process the
\nseparation of the company's management from Semen Gresik to avoid
\nnew problems in the province.<\/p>\n
Akbar pledged to meet with the President and Rizal immediately
