The effort addresses Semarang's significant contribution of 32.76 per cent to Central Java's overall inflation, with authorities urging residents to shop rationally and avoid panic buying.

Semarang’s Mayor, Agustina Wilujeng, formally opened the 2026 Ramadan
Bazaar and coordinated Cheap Food Movement (GPM) across 177
neighbourhoods, centred at the Semarang City Hall courtyard today. This
initiative represents the Semarang municipal government’s commitment to
maintaining price stability and ensuring the availability of essential
goods for residents ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 AH.

“We will intensify this cheap food movement right up until Eid. The
hope is that prices will be controlled. Additionally, we are
collaborating with various stakeholders so that people have access to
meet their basic needs at affordable prices,” Agustina stated in a
written statement on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.

The bazaar, running for two days on 11–12 March 2026, involves 37
corporate and corporate social responsibility tenants and 47 tenants
representing leading micro and small enterprises in Semarang. In
addition to providing food products, the organising committee has
distributed 2,834 cheap foodstuff vouchers to residents through each
sub-district.

This action is undertaken as a practical step to ease the economic
burden on residents amid fluctuations in global market prices. The
measure also aims to provide ease for residents in accessing essential
commodities.

“We have established 240 Cheap Food Movement distribution points, one
of which is here and spread across 177 neighbourhoods. This is an effort
to extend access to cheap food to the smallest points so that the price
control process becomes more effective,” she explained.

On this occasion, Agustina also emphasised the importance of the
public’s role in maintaining inflation stability through wise shopping
practices. She urged residents to avoid panic buying or excessive
purchases, which can trigger product shortages and price increases in
the market.

Beyond focusing on food, the event was also linked to the launch of
the BISMUDIK programme, which provides free mudik buses for Semarang
residents. The Semarang municipal government is providing seven bus
fleets to help residents who wish to return to their hometowns
comfortably and safely. This programme demonstrates the government’s
presence in serving public transport needs during the Eid holiday
period.

“BISMUDIK is part of the Semarang city government’s effort to help
mudik travellers so they feel comfortable and prosperous when facing
Eid,” Agustina said.

In line with the local government’s efforts, the Head of Bank
Indonesia’s Regional Representative Office for Central Java Province,
Mohamad Noor Nugroho, also highlighted the importance of price control
in Semarang. Given that Semarang’s contribution to Central Java’s
overall inflation reaches 32.76 per cent, price stability in this city
is key to regional stability.

“We greatly appreciate the Mayor’s efforts and the Price
Stabilisation Team’s work in maintaining this stability. The public need
not panic because food supply is in adequate condition. Calm and
rational shopping behaviour will greatly help us maintain price
stability so that Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr can be carried out with full
tranquillity,” Noor concluded.
",
