        "content": "<p>Seibu department store opened<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Department stores operating in Indonesia under<br>\nfranchises from foreign retail chains have been asked to<br>\ncooperate with local manufacturers to prevent excessive imports<br>\nof consumer goods.<\/p>\n<p>\"Large-scale retail businesses which operate under<br>\ninternational franchises are encouraged to link up with domestic<br>\nproducers,\" Coordinating Minister for Industry and Trade Hartarto<br>\nsaid yesterday after inaugurating the Jakarta Seibu Department<br>\nStore in Blok M, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>If this is done, he said, franchising will gradually support<br>\ndomestic production, even if, initially, more imported products<br>\nare sold.<\/p>\n<p>\"If they (the franchisees) do not collaborate with domestic<br>\nproducers, our imports of consumer goods will surely increase,\"<br>\nHartarto added.<\/p>\n<p>A surge in the importation of consumer goods is said to have<br>\nbeen partly to blame for Indonesia's trade deficit for the month<br>\nof June.<\/p>\n<p>Hartarto said that, like the industrial and agricultural<br>\nsectors, the retail business is about to enter the free trade<br>\nera.<\/p>\n<p>He said international franchising should help to improve the<br>\nmanagement of local retail businesses, raising sales of locally-<br>\nmade products and boosting tourism.<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Seibu Department Store, owned by ALatief Corp., is<br>\noperated by PT Pasaraya Nusakarya under a franchise agreement<br>\nwith Seiyu Ltd. of Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta Seibu is located on 12,000 square meters of land,<br>\noccupying four floors of the Mega Pasaraya shopping complex,<br>\nwhich is managed by Pasaraya.<\/p>\n<p>According to Usman Dja'far, president of ALatief Corp., trial<br>\noperations of the department store started on Aug. 25.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday's opening ceremony was also attended by Japanese<br>\nAmbassador Taizo Watanabe, Minister of Manpower (and owner of<br>\nALatief Corp.)
