        "content": "<p>Seeded clubs cruise to badminton c'ships quarters<\/p>\n<p>By Novan Iman Santosa<\/p>\n<p>BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan (JP): Seeded badminton clubs,<br>\nmostly from Java, proved their power over non-Javan clubs in final<br>\nround-robin matches at the Inter-club National Badminton<br>\nChampionship at Hasanuddin HM sports hall on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Top seed and favorite Jaya Raya of Jakarta, relying mostly on<br>\nits world class shuttlers, crushed host Rajawali 5-0 in group A.<\/p>\n<p>Lidya Djaelawidjaya, currently ranked world number eight, easily<br>\ndefeated Dina Kartika 11-1, 11-1 in the women's singles. Junior<br>\nHendra Setiawan beat Herry Cahyadi 15-5, 15-6 in the men's<br>\nsingles.<\/p>\n<p>Women's doubles Deyana Lomban and Indarti Issoliana crushed<br>\nDewi Hurai and Debby Cynthia 15-1, 15-1 while the Sydney Olympics<br>\ngold medalists Candra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan barely sweated out<br>\nto eliminate Bebeto and Thio A 15-2, 15-1 in the men's doubles.<\/p>\n<p>Bambang Santoso and Emma Ermawati sealed Jaya Raya's victory<br>\nby defeating Edwin and Dewi Hurai 15-3, 15-3 in the mixed<br>\ndoubles.<\/p>\n<p>Surabaya-based Surya Naga Gudang Garam also easily defeated<br>\nPusri of Palembang, South Sumatra, 5-0 in group B.<\/p>\n<p>Yenny Diah opened her team's victory by crushing Erti Triani<br>\n15-2, 15-0 in women's singles followed by teammate Ronny<br>\nAgustinus who overcame Andy Ferry 15-4, 15-3 in the men's<br>\nsingles.<\/p>\n<p>Ernita and Yunita defeated Erti Triani and Dharma Gustiwati<br>\n15-3, 15-2 in the women's doubles while Tri Kusherjanto and Wahyu<br>\nAgung beat Ambo Anke and Ahmad Rifani 15-6, 15-10. Imam Tohari<br>\nand Angeline de Pauw completed Surya Naga's victorious campaign<br>\nby eliminating Ahmad Rifani and Dharma Gustiwati 15-3, 15-4 in<br>\nthe mixed doubles.   Jaya Raya will be challenged by Surya Naga<br>\nin Friday's quarterfinals encounter.<\/p>\n<p>\"We never underestimate our opponents and will always be<br>\nalert. Our players are ready to give their best,\" said Jaya Raya<br>\ncoach Retno Kustiyah.<\/p>\n<p>\"We have estimated losing a point in the men's singles as<br>\nSurya Naga has Ronny. But we must secure another four points. We<br>\ncan't afford to loose in those matches.\"<\/p>\n<p>Surya Naga coach Wijanarko said his team would try to steal<br>\npoints from the men's and women's singles and mixed doubles.<\/p>\n<p>\"I have to admit my players' skills are still under Jaya<br>\nRaya's shuttlers but they will do their best to try to steal some<br>\npoints.\"<\/p>\n<p>In group C, Sangkuriang Graha Sarana (SGS) of Bandung<br>\noverwhelmed PMS of Surakarta, Central Java, 5-0 to meet<br>\nBanjarmasin's Bina Benua which also won 5-0 over East Kalimantan<br>\nPublic Works Agency in group D.   SGS' Yuli Marfuah beat Sisi 11-4,<br>\n11-0 in the women's singles followed by teenage idol Taufik Hidayat<br>\nwho seemed to have a little trouble over Darmawan in her first game<br>\nbefore winning it 15-8. In the second game, Taufik blanked Darmawan<br>\n15-0.<\/p>\n<p>Yuli Marfuah and Rita Kristiane beat Yustina and Tri Asih 15-4,<br>\n15-1 in the women's doubles. Flandy Limpele and Halim Heryanto beat<br>\nCandra and Lukman 15-2, 15-7 in the men's doubles. Meanwhile Flandy<br>\nand Lita Nurlita crushed Bayu Radeha and Dwi Septi 15-0, 15-3 in<br>\nthe mixed doubles.<\/p>\n<p>\"I consider Bina Benua to be a tough opponent because local people<br>\nwill of course support their own team. We'll just field<br>\nour best players,\" SGS' manager Lutfi Hamid told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\"But if we beat Bina Benua, we will face an even tougher<br>\nrival, most probably Jaya Raya. I hope my men's doubles of Flandy<br>\nand Halim will be able to beat Tony and Candra.\"<\/p>\n<p>Mutiara Elvana of Bandung, managed by former women's singles<br>\nshuttler Ivana Lie, also reached the quarters after defeating<br>\nKlinik Sekanak of Palembang, South Sumatra, 5-0 in group E.<\/p>\n<p>Elvana is scheduled to challenge group F winner Jakarta-based<br>\nTangkas. Tangkas -- backboned by Olympic silver medalist<br>\nHendrawan -- overcame ICLI Gowata of Makassar, South Sulawesi,<br>\nalso with 5-0.<\/p>\n<p>Defending champion Djarum Kudus of Central Java found no<br>\ntrouble sending home Tirta Barito of Central Kalimantan 5-0.<br>\nDjarum -- which includes National Games gold medalist Johan<br>\nHadikusuma and the 1997 world champion Sigit Budiarto in the<br>\nmen's doubles -- will play Wima of East Java in another<br>\nquarterfinals match.<\/p>\n<p>Winners of the quarterfinals will fight it out in Friday's<br>\nafternoon semifinals.<\/p>",
