Security up near U.S. embassy<\/p>\n
WASHINGTON (AP): The State Department said Friday Indonesian
\nauthorities have stepped up security around the U.S. embassy in
\nJakarta, giving hope that normal operations there can resume
\nsoon.<\/p>\n
The public services section of the embassy has been closed
\nsince Oct. 24.<\/p>\n
\"We're constantly reviewing the security situation. We're
\nhopeful that circumstances will allow normal public operations to
\nresume,\" department spokesman Richard Boucher said.<\/p>\n
The partial shutdown was ordered because of what was described
\nas a credible threat to the embassy compound.<\/p>\n
Also, there have been repeated protests at the U.S. consulate
\nin Indonesia's second largest city, Surabaya.<\/p>\n
In addition, American visitors to the city of Surakarta (Solo)
\nhave faced demands from Islamic militants that they leave the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
Some of the anti-Americanism has been generated by U.S.
\nAmbassador Robert Gelbard, who has alienated some groups with his
\ncalls for economic, political and economic reform.<\/p>\n
Gelbard says those who oppose him are committed enemies of
\nIndonesia's democratically-elected government.<\/p>\n
Gelbard returned to the United States this week on personal
\nbusiness and will consult with department officials in Washington
\non the situation at the end of next week.<\/p>",
