Security needs public support<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): National Police Chief Lt. Gen. Dibyo Widodo has
\nurged people to intensify their own security systems in their
\nsurroundings to help fight crime.<\/p>\n
\"It's impossible for the police to be at all places at all
\ntimes,\" the three-star general told 20,000 personnel of the
\ncivilian security members yesterday.<\/p>\n
Dibyo said that with a limited number of personnel and
\nequipment, the police have tried their best to safeguard
\nresidents and maintain public order wherever possible.<\/p>\n
However, \"there are still many housing complexes, offices and
\nschools which have yet to be secured adequately by the police\",
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Despite the lack of police personnel, \"we have observed and
\nlearned of the great potential within communities, both in terms
\nof number and spirit, to fight crimes\", Dibyo said at the annual
\ngathering of security personnel in the eastern parking lot of
\nSenayan sports complex.<\/p>\n
Moreover, he said, everyone should increase alertness in face
\nof next year's general election.<\/p>\n
\"Active participation of the public with all their potential
\nis highly needed to maintain peace and order, to make the general
\nelection a great success,\" said the former Jakarta police chief.<\/p>\n
Today Indonesia has about 150,000 police personnel assigned to
\nprotect the total population of approximately 185 million.<\/p>\n
The gathering yesterday was attended by neighborhood security
\ngroups comprising civilians, retired Armed Forces members, Satpam
\n(security guards), Hansip (village guards), members of youth
\norganizations and university students trained in security and
\nmilitary defense.<\/p>\n
In a number of remote area outside the city, such as in Bekasi
\nand Tangerang, local communities find it difficult to set up
\ntheir own security systems. Poor roads, lighting and lack of
\ntelephone lines are among difficulties encountered.<\/p>\n
Numerous robberies, rapes and holdups in front of helpless
\nvillagers are reported every month in Bekasi and Tangerang. (bsr)<\/p>",
