Security is under control, says Armed Forces<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Armed Forces (ABRI) said yesterday that
\nsecurity remained firmly under control as Indonesia prepares to
\ncomplete the last stages of the election.<\/p>\n
ABRI chief spokesman Brig. Gen. Slamet Supriadi attributed
\nthis to the support and participation of the people, particularly
\nthe three political organizations which contested the May 29
\nelection.<\/p>\n
Supriadi praised the role played by public and religious
\nleaders, scholars and the media in calming the situation and
\nstrengthening national unity and stability.<\/p>\n
\"For this, the ABRI leadership expresses its gratitude to all
\nthe people of Indonesia, especially the political organizations
\nand the domestic media,\" he said at a media briefing at ABRI's
\nJl. Merdeka Barat headquarters.<\/p>\n
\"Let's maintain and strengthen our cooperation until next
\nyear's meeting of the People's Consultative Assembly,\" he said.<\/p>\n
On the role of the media, Supriadi described their coverage as
\n\"responsible, proportional, balanced and impartial\".<\/p>\n
\"For this, we thank you. This comes from the bottom of our
\nhearts,\" he said.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Lt. Gen. Mutojib, the chief of the State
\nIntelligence Coordinating Board (Bakin) also gave the \"thumbs up\"
\nto domestic media coverage of the election.<\/p>\n
Describing the tension in the run-up to the May 29 election
\nand the period immediately after as signs of dynamic political
\ndevelopment, Supriadi said yesterday that the chief task now was
\nto lessen the political temperature so that the remaining stages
\nof the election process could be completed.<\/p>\n
The General Elections Institute is still counting votes. Next
\ncomes the formal endorsement of the results by the three
\ncontestants on June 17, and the swearing in of the new members of
\nthe House of Representatives and the People's Consultative
\nAssembly (MPR) in October.<\/p>\n
The MPR is slated to hold its general session in March to
\nelect a president and vice president and draw up policy
\nguidelines for the next five years.<\/p>\n
When asked to comment on the Indonesian Democratic Party's
\nthreat of boycotting the remaining stages in protest of alleged
\nelection rigging, Supriadi said: \"Since it hasn't happened, I
\ncan't comment on it.\"<\/p>\n
He urged everyone to \"strengthen unity, get rid of mutual
\nsuspicions, and uphold the culture of Pancasila democracy\".<\/p>\n
\"Let's resolve problems and conflicts by deliberation and
\nconsensus, based on the constitution and laws.<\/p>\n
\"I appeal to the people, and the political organizations to
\nstay on the alert against attempts by certain parties bent on
\nfoiling the election and the MPR meeting or on sowing seeds of
\ndivision,\" he said.<\/p>\n
