        "content": "<p>Security forces set up for mass rallies<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Defense Mahfud MD claimed that the<br>\ngovernment had uncovered evidence that certain groups were<br>\nplanning to increase tension in the capital by conducting mass<br>\nrallies, with the ultimate goal of destabilizing the government.<\/p>\n<p>\"The groups have held several meetings in Central Java,\"<br>\nMahfud claimed without identifying the parties involved.<\/p>\n<p>He further alleged that the groups, who's members are mostly<br>\nbased in Jakarta, infiltrate non-governmental organizations as a<br>\nmeans of provoking disorder.<\/p>\n<p>\"They will enter into human rights and democracy issues as a<br>\npretense for fulfilling a certain ideological goal,\" he remarked.<\/p>\n<p>Mahfud also remarked than another group was intending to cause<br>\nchaotic riots, similar to those experienced in May 1998.<\/p>\n<p>Mahfud made his remarks during a press briefing, in<br>\nanticipation of possible heightened political tension next week.<\/p>\n<p>There have been reports that pro and anti-Abdurrahman Wahid<br>\nsupporters will descend on the capital on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\"We should be very careful with these groups, and of course<br>\nthe government will be prepared for these people,\" Mahfud<br>\nmaintained.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesman for the Coordinating Minister for Political, Social<br>\nand Security Affairs Maj. Gen. I Wayan Karya said, after the<br>\ncoordinating ministerial meeting on Wednesday, that police and<br>\nmilitary personnel had been ordered to prepare ahead of Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Coordinating Minister for Political, Social and Security<br>\nAffairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered the police to<br>\n'sterilize' the Presidential Palace, the National Monument<br>\ncompound and the House of Representatives compound,\" I Wayan<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Ma'mun Al Ayubi, the Jakarta chapter chairman of the Nahdlatul<br>\nUlama Ansor Youth Movement, said that he had instructed members<br>\nin the capital not to be involved in any mass rallies.<\/p>\n<p>\"We will just remain silent and decline to join any march, as<br>\nthere is no order to make such a move from our leaders,\" Ma'mun<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Ma'mun, who claimed to head at least 10,000 NU youth<br>\nsupporters in Jakarta, said that his office has yet to receive<br>\nany formal notice about the impending mobilization from the Ansor<br>\nheadquarters.<\/p>\n<p>\"We also want to maintain safety and security in the capital,\"<br>\nsaid Ma'mun after a meeting with Governor Sutiyoso at City Hall.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that during the past holiday season and the coming<br>\nChinese New Year the group was cooperating with city police and<br>\nofficials to help ensure security and order.(02\/07\/dja)<\/p>",
