Security forces braced for possible violence<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Ten thousand of the city's security forces
\nparaded Saturday in an attempt to assure the public they are
\nready to handle any disturbances.<\/p>\n
Led by Jakarta Police chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman, the
\ndisplay at the Senayan East Parking Lot in Central Jakarta
\nincluded members of the police, military and marines' elite
\nunits.<\/p>\n
Intelligence and military police officers were also present.<\/p>\n
\"We want to build public trust again,\" Noegroho told the media
\nafter inspecting the parade.<\/p>\n
The participants were less than half of the city's 25,000
\nsecurity forces personnel, he said, adding that all of them are
\non constant alert to maintain security in the capital.<\/p>\n
Noegroho denied accusations that the parade was held in a bid
\nto anticipate the plans of Megawati Soekarnoputri's supporters
\nwho intend to hold rallies today to mark the second anniversary
\nof a bloody attack on the party headquarters in defiance of a
\npolice ban.<\/p>\n
\"I'm new in the capital. I have to count and consolidate the
\nforces. It is not a show of force.<\/p>\n
\"The July 27 commemoration is just an activity that we have to
\nmonitor because that kind of event could be manipulated by
\nirresponsible parties who always want to create chaos,\" he
\nargued.<\/p>\n
\"There are no special preparations (by the security forces)
\nfor July 27, because there will be no public commemoration. We
\ndid not issue any permit whatsoever. But they said they're going
\nto stage a street rally.<\/p>\n
\"Well, if they insist on doing so, we will try to be as
\nsympathetic and persuasive as possible. But of course if they
\nviolate the regulations, we will take firm action,\" Noegroho
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He said that people have grown tired of unrest.<\/p>\n
\"Understand one thing here. People have suffered too much from
\nthis crisis,\" he reminded.<\/p>\n
In his speech, Noegroho reiterated five points to the security
\npersonnel when dealing with public: give good service, be
\npersuasive, obey the law, maintain a good relationship with all
\nsegments of society and take firm action only as the last option.<\/p>\n
\"Why do you have to follow these points? Because in this era
\nof reform, people have become very critical and we have to be
\ncareful over every step we take.\"<\/p>\n
Among the officials who attended the parade were City Governor
\nSutiyoso, Jakarta Military Police Commander Col. Hendardji,
\nJakarta Military Command Chief of Staff Brig. Gen. Sudi Silalahi
\nand National Mobile Brigade Commander Brig. Gen. S.Y. Wenas.
