Secessionists rob villagers<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Commander of the regional military
\ncommand Maj. Gen. I Ketut Wirdhana said the villagers of Hoya in
\nthe hinterland of Ilaga, Paniai regency, have often been the
\ntarget of robbery and assault launched by a group of
\nsecessionist.<\/p>\n
The rebels, calling themselves the Free Papua Organization,
\nhave reportedly frightened the villagers so greatly that many
\nhave fled to the forests, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
In addition, there were also people who reportedly abandoned
\ntheir village to join the rebels in the forests. "Since January,
\naround 1,000 residents of Hoya have fled to the forests because
\nof the members of the GPK," Wirdhana said.<\/p>\n
GPK is a government security term meaning peace-disturbing
\nmovement.<\/p>\n
Wirdhana said there were around 200 members of the movement in
\nhiding in the thick forests of Irian Jaya.<\/p>\n
"Those Free Papua members frighten the villagers by, for
\ninstance, saying that the Armed Forces are coming to get them,"
