The search operation for victims of the sunken Motor Sailing Vessel\n(KLM) Nurul Salsa in the waters of South Sulawesi is now being conducted\non a more massive scale. Entering its fourth day on Saturday (18 July),\nthe joint team under the command of Basarnas Makassar took the strategic\ndecision to expand the search area to 448 square nautical miles, or more\nthan 800,000 square kilometres.<\/p>\n
The expansion was taken following the latest evaluation of sea\ncurrent and wind conditions, which are considered potentially capable of\ncarrying victims away from the vessel\u2019s original sinking location. The\nsearch effort involves multidimensional forces, ranging from Basarnas,\nthe Indonesian Navy, the Indonesian Air Force, BPBD, the Marine Police,\nto fishermen from the Sabalana Islands.<\/p>\n
The joint team was divided into two search sectors (SRU) to maximise\nsweeping operations.<\/p>\n
The Head of Basarnas Makassar, Muhammad Arif Anwar, explained that\nthe expansion of the operational area was based on an analysis of\nnatural dynamics. \u201cThe evaluation results show significant current\nmovement, so we must reach a wider area. The recent discovery of a life\njacket is also an indication that victims and evidence may have been\ncarried by currents to other points,\u201d said Arif.<\/p>\n
To strengthen the operation, KN Pacitan from Kendari has also been\ndeployed to reinforce the search teams in the field. Arif emphasised his\ncommitment to continue optimising the SAR operation.<\/p>\n
To date, 25 people remain listed as missing. Arif invited all\nelements of society to pray for the smooth running of the search\nprocess, hoping the weather will be favourable and bring good news soon\nto the victims\u2019 families.<\/p>\n
