The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) has expanded the\nsearch area for victims of the capsized KM Virgo Transport 8 in the Java\nSea on Tuesday (15\/9).<\/p>\n
\u201cToday the search area has been widened. The area of the search for\nthe waters or sea is 4,600 nautical miles, nearly double that of\nyesterday, divided into six sectors,\u201d said Head of the Banjarmasin Class\nA Search and Rescue Office, I Putu Sudayana, to reporters on\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
Putu said a number of Indonesian Navy vessels were also deployed in\nTuesday\u2019s search operation, including KRI Canopus, which possesses\ntechnology to assist the underwater search process.<\/p>\n
\u201cKRI Canopus has been plotted in a sector, if I\u2019m not mistaken sector\n5. Then there is KRI Nala, KRI Gusti Ngurah Rai and KRI Pulau Fani,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen there is also KN SAR Laksmana, KN Kunyit, the vessel Kumai and\nKN SAR Wisanggeni, as well as a police vessel on standby,\u201d he\ncontinued.<\/p>\n
On Monday (14\/9), divers who had been deployed to assist the\nunderwater search were unable to operate due to adverse weather\nconditions.<\/p>\n
As a result, Basarnas Chief Air Marshal Mohammad Syafii said the\nagency would utilise the technology aboard the Navy\u2019s KRI Canopus to\nconduct an underwater search.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will carry out an underwater search using the technology on board\nthe Canopus, including its underwater drone, Multibeam Echo Sounder, and\nROV,\u201d he said on Monday.<\/p>\n
As of Monday, of the 243 people on board the vessel, 114 had been\nfound while 129 others were still being sought.<\/p>\n
KM Virgo Transport 8 was reported to have lost contact in the Java\nSea at around 02:00 Central Indonesia Time on Sunday (13\/9), while\nsailing from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, having departed on Saturday\n(12\/9).
