SEAG training chief to question Pelti<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The 2001 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games training
\ndirector, Kusnan Ismukanto, said on Wednesday he would ask the
\nIndonesian Tennis Association (Pelti) to explain why it had
\ncalled up men's singles Peter Handoyo to join the Games squad.<\/p>\n
Kusnan said he had no idea why Pelti preferred to pick Peter,
\nwho has no national ranking, over seniors like Andrian
\nRaturandang, Hendri Susilo Pramono and Febi Widhiyanto.<\/p>\n
"I'll pay special attention to this case. I'll ask Pelti about
\nit," he told reporters after a meeting with training officials at
\nthe office of the National Sports Council (KONI).<\/p>\n
Kusnan said that basically a training director would not
\ninterfere in any decision made by a sports organization regarding
\nits strategy for winning medals in the Games, which are to be
\nheld in Kuala Lumpur from Sept. 8 to Sept. 17.<\/p>\n
"We don't want to interfere with Pelti's decision. It's up to
\nthem to pick their players for the Games. But the SEA Games
\ntennis team manager Ibu Martina Widjaja told us that Pelti would
\ncall up the most senior players, who would be accompanied by
\njuniors.<\/p>\n
"In the future, hopefully the juniors will become successful
\nin their own right. She also said that Pelti must take the
\nnecessary step to ensure the regeneration of the national squad."<\/p>\n
Peter was called up to join the Games team along with Suwandi
\nand doubles specialists Bonit Wiryawan and Sulistyo Wibowo. The
\ndecision was made public in a special letter signed by Pelti
\nchairman Tanri Abeng on Monday.<\/p>\n
Peter leapfrogged over Andrian, Hendri and Febi, the
\nIndonesian numbers 2, 3 and 4 singles respectively. All of the
\nplayers had been nominated for the SEA Games team, plus junior
\nEko Kurniawan.<\/p>\n
Hendri, Febi and Eko are currently competing in the German
\nleague.<\/p>\n
Pelti's criteria in selecting its players remain unclear, but
\nthe association's spokesman Benny Mailili said Monday that a
\nplayer's national ranking was not the only determinant.<\/p>\n
Benny was quoted by Satusports.com as saying that Pelti had
\ngiven Peter the opportunity of joining the squad. Moreover, Peter
\nhad pledged to compete in six satellite tournaments in
\npreparation for the biennial event.<\/p>\n
Pelti also named old hand Yayuk Basuki for the Games. She will
\nbe accompanied by Romana Tedjakusuma and juniors Wynne Prakusya
\nand Angelique Widjaja.<\/p>\n
The women's team will also play in the Fed Cup in Austria in
\nJuly.<\/p>\n
Kusnan also said that 16 out of 29 sports organizations had
\ngiven commitments to finance their own training programs.<\/p>\n
"Their commitments will benefit KONI because we will save some
\nRp 6.6 billion (US$570,000) which had earlier been allocated to
\nsupport their athletes' training," he said.<\/p>\n
The 16 organizations are the Soccer Association of Indonesia
\n(PSSI), the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI), Pelti, the
\nIndonesian Amateur Boxing Association (Pertina), the Indonesian
\nVolleyball Federation (PBVSI), the Indonesian Weightlifting,
\nPowerlifting and Bodybuilding Association (PABBSI), the
\nIndonesian Judo Association (PJSI), the Indonesian Bowling
\nAssociation (PBI), the Indonesian Equestrian and Horse Racing
\nAssociation (Pordasi), the Indonesian Table Tennis Association
\n(PTMSI), the Indonesian Golf Association (PGI), the Indonesian
\nSquash Association (PSI), the Indonesian Karate-do Federation
\n(Forki), the Indonesian Hockey Association (PHSI), the Indonesian
\nTaekwondo Association (TI) and the Indonesian Wushu Association
