SEA Games venues ready by August<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): All venues for the 19th Southeast Asian (SEA)
\nGames here in October will be ready by the end of August,
\norganizers said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The organizers' venue and equipment deputy chairman,
\nSaptodarsono, said the Senayan sports complex, which will host 18
\nsports, had been under renovation since November.<\/p>\n
\"All venues will be ready for the Games by the end of August,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
The Gelora Senayan management board is paying for the Rp 20
\nbillion (US$8.3 million) renovation. Twenty five percent of the
\nmoney is to renovate the Senayan Main Stadium, which will host
\nthe opening and closing ceremonies and the soccer final.<\/p>\n
Archery, track and field, badminton, basketball, bodybuilding,
\nweightlifting, judo, fencing, soccer, hockey, wrestling, tennis,
\nsquash, swimming, shooting, indoor and beach volleyball and
\nsoftball will all be staged at the complex.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta city administration is providing Rp 3 billion to
\nrenovate other venues.<\/p>\n
Rawamangun velodrome for track cycling, Soemantri Brodjonegoro
\nsports hall for boxing, Jakarta Gymnastics Center on Jl. Raden
\nInten, East Jakarta Sports Hall for sepak takraw, Bulungan Sports
\nHall for tae kwon do and karate and Sunter Lake for water skiing
\nare the other venues being upgraded.<\/p>\n
Venues in Jakarta which the city administration does not own
\nare not getting any renovation funds.<\/p>\n
Billiards and snooker will be at the Golden Hotel or the
\nJakarta Fair Ground Kemayoran, soccer at the Lebak Bulus and
\nKuningan stadiums, golf at the Matoa national golf and country
\nclub, pencak silat at the Pencak Silat Dormitory near Taman Mini
\nIndonesia Indah, table tennis at the Pertamina Simpruk hall, 10-
\npin bowling at the Megamall Pluit, wushu at the Jakarta Fair
\nGround Kemayoran and sailing at Ancol.<\/p>\n
Some events will be held outside Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Rowing<\/p>\n
Canoeing, rowing and traditional boat racing will be at the
\nJatiluhur dam in Purwakarta, West Java. Otorita Jatiluhur and the
\nMinistry of Public Works are helping to renovate the venue.<\/p>\n
Cycling's individual time trials and road races will be on the
\nCikampek toll road.<\/p>\n
Mountainbiking will be at Subang, women's soccer in Bogor and
\nshooting's skeet and trap at Cilodong.<\/p>\n
New facilities for squash, wushu and contract bridge are being
\nbuilt at the Senayan Main stadium.<\/p>\n
The Games consortium is helping to build a Rp 1.5 billion
\nartificial-surface hockey court.<\/p>\n
Saptodarsono said 900 medical personnel would be deployed for
\nthe Games which will be staged from Oct. 11 to Oct. 19.<\/p>\n
Eighty-five ambulances will be borrowed from state, military
\nand private hospitals.<\/p>\n
Saptodarsono, who is also chairman of the Senayan Sports
\nComplex, denied claims by consortium chairman Bambang Yoga
\nSoegama that the complex had been leased to the consortium.<\/p>\n
\"The consortium does not rent the complex. The Rp 3.5 billion
\nmoney from the consortium is used to pay the electricity and
\nwater bills and also to pay our staff,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"The management cannot lease the complex to others during the
\nrenovation. This means we don't receive any income. But we still
\nhave to pay our staff,\" he said.<\/p>\n
It costs Rp 12 billion a year to maintain the complex and the
\ngovernment does not subsidize it. (yan)<\/p>",
